| Moral Turnip Location: Oregon, US Posts: 2,283 | Top Ten Volconvo Debaters Yeah, I know; there are too many of these, and they're thoroughly redundant. But they're fun, too. I admit getting a little thrill when Zinkovich was kind enough to proffer my name in LullabyChainer's thread; this way, we can share the love. In alphabetical order (not best to worst), here are my choices: Autolykos The Bacon Guy Bishop Captain Chaos Isherwood lsbskins1 Osborn F. Enready RickSp Zinkovich zynner Much of this is based on what I see as the most useful qualities for a debater: the ability to write well and to explain one's thoughts completely; the ability to be either objective or subjective depending on the situation; the ability to thoroughly savage trolls and one-post-wonders. I also want to mention that the best one-on-one argument I've read was between Pale Rider and Technosoul in the Life Begins at Conception thread; excellent work on both sides, and an object lesson in how useless debate can be when people do not find common ground. EDIT TO ADD: I'm changing this list, because I just realized I left off two of my very favorite posters: Bacon Guy and Captain Chaos. So off go Chris the Chees and MattW. Forgive me, Captain, Bacon; all I can say is I must not have had enough coffee this morning. "Would you like some pie, Dr. Stark?" "Science is my pie. Curiosity, my sweet tooth. Knowledge is my candy." Last edited by CoffeeSaint; Nov 10, 2006 at 01:42 pm. |

Mainly because I consider a good debater as someone able to engage in intelligent discourse on any topic, not just troll the subjects where they can push their own particular ideology. I also think subjectivity has no place in formal spoken debate, as the winner is usually determined as the one who can present irrefutable objective reasoning. I tend to align that to online debate as well... since we have the ability to post links to proof, if we are debating but can't prove opinions with facts, then we lose. If we are just discussing, then subjectivity is fine. But then again, I am nothing like this online persona, and I use this representation to refine debating points that I use in live debates against real people where you have to rely on objectivity and don't have sources to cite other than the ones you memorize to mention. I didn't think online debating would be much different, but the anonymity and ability to insult other people tends to be too enticing. |

That said, ignorance can be arbitrarily measured for everyone, and I stand guilty .The more painless an exercise, the more likely you are of doing it. The more painful an exercise, the more likely you are of learning from it. |

Has he posted on anything other than abortion in the past two years? "I wish I was as cocksure of anything as Tom Macaulay is of everything." -- Viscount Melbourne |

Sooner or later, it's going to be men in thongs again. Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. -- Song 8:6 |

![]() I don't do nearly as much debating as i used to since I became a mod, I find you have to take something of a step back and not get to involved. Well thats the excuse anyway. ![]() Society may be formed so as to exist without crime, without poverty, […] no obstacle whatsoever intervenes at this moment except ignorance to prevent such a state of society.
