Mel Gibson drunken BIGOT!

For twenty years we knew Mel Gibson was a vile homophobe, there was even an Advocate magazine cover which ridiculed him. Now it turns out he's as nasty an anti-semite as his whacko father, and sexist too. So much for your G*D DAMN holier-than-thou phoney speel. Your DUI and scandal couldn't happen to anyone more deserving!

For which he's apologized (though only he knows if he meant the apology or not). Alcohol makes many people say and do things they might not have with a clear head. So he's human. I find it hard to condemn a person for that. Is he a hypocrite? Perhaps. But I've never had much interest in his religious beliefs anyway, and I've not seen Passion nor do I intend to ( I really liked Mad Max, though).

But pretty atypical for someone who professes to be such a devout Christian. Nice guy.

Hmmm. Not especially atypical. I've seen many devout religious buckle under pressure, stress or chemical influence and expose their inner humanity.
Their own fellow believers are harsher on them, and slower to forgive them for not having maintained their own high standards than am I. My only standard is being human. Even a drunken, bigoted jerk is just being human. Can you tell I don't expect a hell of a lot from humans? :)

Some of the posters in this thread are pretty atypical of people who have only met one or a few christians and generalized the entire group.

A good number of my devout christian friends can throw down beers with the best of em.

What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

I believe if you are a bigot you are a bigot, period. It's not like he BECAME one because he was buzzed. Stress or alcohol/drugs only makes it easier to release what is already there.
I really don't care about Gibson or anyone else in this regard. I just notice that society seems to hold people who push their religion to a somewhat higher standard than everyone else (Do people think the Pope is a regular guy?) and they seem to enjoy having people feel that way. He's an actor. I couldn't care less about him personally.

Yeah, he must feel that way to have said those things. Unless he was just really pissed. I've said things I didn't mean at all just to hurt the other person (not that I'm proud of that, but it's happened).

Gibson never apologised for his anti gay remarks twenty years ago..........see we have memory like an elephant, and we hold a grudge like no one else. Gibson came off like an Opus Dei freakazoid after Passion of the Christ, he ONLY attends Mass in LATIN.

did anybody see the "The passion of the Jew" a Southpark episode? It shows Mel Gibson doing everything that article wrote about him.

I'm the thought that never crossed my mind.

Hey, give the poor fucker a break fercrissakes. He's Australian after all, and as Paul Theroux noted, you'd be hard pressed to find a more all-consuming will to inebriation on the entire planet (short of Finns in winter) than with Australians.

So due account must be taken for his, uh, cultural handicap. :)

NPR just covered this, with a little back story. Apparently Gibson's father was a virilent Holocaust denier. When asked back in '04 if he subscribed to his father's views, Gibson denied being anti-semitic, but left it with a cryptic, "My father has never lied to me." Also, in his Passion of the Christ, he removed the 'blood curse' against the Jews as murderers of Christ... as least the english subtitle... leaving the aramaic dialogue in.

For all the, "aw, he was just an actor being drunk, what's the big deal", I find the whole thing a bit disturbing. Would anyone here be chuckling if he'd gone on about the damn 'niggers'?

.
