| moderat-e/o-r Location: boston Posts: 11,184 | hot... holy sh*t is it hot over here... my walk across the street this morning resulted in streams of sweat pouring down my face. everyone else waiting for the bus headed for the cover that the tree provided from the beaming sun.. i don't do well at all in the heat, especially in the sun (i'm easily susceptible to heat stroke)... by the time i got home, i ended up passing out cold for at least 2 hours.. didn't intentionally sleep that long - the heat killed me today. tomorrow's supposed to be worse than today.. maybe the entire rest of the week will be this bad.. my a/c's just barely managing to keep the room somewhat comfortable. i also hear that the entire state of ny has an air quality warning in effect. |

| moderat-e/o-r Location: boston Posts: 11,184 | i remember one of the heat waves when i used to work in newark, nj... first off, newark is a total shithole.. the alleys reek of piss. cops walk around on horseback - the horses shit all over the place and they just leave it there (on the streets!) to fester and bake in the sun.. one day, it was in the 90's, humid as hell and i remember a nice breeze. only problem is that at that temperature, a breeze doesn't feel refreshing whatsoever. instead, it was like getting blasted with this purtrid, trash-smelling, wet like a nutsack wall of air. man do i hate the heat... |

You all should go see "An inconvenient truth" cause it makes you wonder. Co2 levels... temperature rises... record heat waves... deaths in Europe. More deaths to come, and this does place a strain on the nations' electricity supply, with mofos sucking up the AC all over the nation. My damn electric bill was $128 last month and $135 this month. | moderat-e/o-r Location: boston Posts: 11,184 | electric bill's gone up 50% since i've been blasting my a/c nonstop... still, it's only $75 so that isn't a big deal to me.. i'll pay the money rather than suffer in the swamp balls heat. feels somewhat bearable now that the temperature dropped a little bit - but it's ungodly humid out here.. |

And that's only cooling to 79 in the day, and a little lower in the evening. I'm not even comfortable and paying outrageous sums. I am afraid of July and August billings. | Retired Posts: 7,312 | I think she's in TX. TX is humid. Her screen name makes me think of AZ, where it is on average 10 degrees higher but very dry. I was pretty miserable in that too. I had 111 just southeast of Los Angeles two days ago and had no problems. Been in the high 80s with massive humidity the last two days and I've slept with the AC. To run my 4 ton AC a month would be $300, but I also left one AC in the wall and that is left on mostly when I am home and it takes care of a lot at only $30 and uses less energy which is good for the environment and neighbors around me. :-) | |

| Retired Posts: 7,312 | I've been wondering if a window unit for the bedroom would be cost effective. I need it cooled way down to be able to sleep and right now I have to cool down the whole place. At 1:30 in the AM it is staying on almost constantly to keep it at only 77. It will run for 2 hours straight to get it to 72 (sleeping temp). It never bothered me before because I never had a bill above $130 in the hottest month. But my new place is bigger and has vaulted ceilings. AND an out-dated, non energy efficient unit. I should have replaced it in May. It pays for itself in a few summers, so the sooner I bite the bullet, the sooner I will save. "...with like-minded people one cannot discuss. For about $139 you could find at least a 8000 BTU. I am running one 12,000 BTU most of the time and the increase in my bill for a whole month is $30. If you got an 8000 or 6000 your bill would be about $20 more a month. So the entire increase in your cost for a few months of cold air would be this year about $220. Next year when you don't count the purchase of the AC you will have a bill of about $60 for a few months total. A low powered fan can help circulate the AC. | |
