Modern Music

So, we have the thread for the fossils. Time to step into the now.

What new bands are you listening to? Show us something that we may not have heard yet... or tell us why the popular stuff is worthy of being popular.

I live in Columbus, OH and am lucky enough to have CD101, the world's greatest independent alternative radio station. While they do play the occasional old or retarded song, the vast majority of their music is awesome.

They play bands like Franz Ferdinand, OK go, placebo, the Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeah's, and many more. They also play a lot of independent music and local music.

So, give us some bands & songs.

Switchfoot rocks. Take your pick. I personally like "Ammunition" and "Stars" a whole lot. Also anything by Kutless. The "Strong Tower" cd is one of my all time favorites, with the title song and the song "Take Me In" standing out as absolute favorites. I've only heard one of Demon Hunter's cds but I loved all of it. Just about anything by the Newsboys. I've listened to Casting Crowns so many times I've memorized it. Thousand Foot Krutch and Pillar are also fine choices to rock out to. I have Train's "My Private Nation" cd and love it, especially "Calling All Angels". Sanctus Real's song "Everything About You" is awesome. So many bands, so little time.

Rob Dougan's Clubbed to Death and Juno Reactor's Mona Lisa Overdrive are some of my favorites. Also, some of SOAD's new stuff is pretty good, I particularly like Tentative.

Oh, dear Lord. Franz Ferdinand? The Strokes? How stereotypical of you. Are you one of those quasi-recently out-of-college guys who is "Independent" because he listens to Modest Mouse and their derivatives (e.g., Franz Ferdinand)? You probably also think that older rock (but not the classic stuff) is too "simple" or "polished", right?

System and Station is a good local band. I like the Seaworthies.

On the national scene? Hmm. Weezer probably doesn't count as new, but I like them. I like the Dandy Warhols, a little bit of The Ataris, and the Gorillaz (if they count as "new"). I think most of the Indie music scene is crap, but at least they're experimenting.

New music i listen to?

As i lay dying
It dies today
Killswitch Engage
DragonForce
Trivium
Iron Maiden (old sure, but they still come out with new stuff)

what are they gonna do when the lights go down?
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun?
Other than tremble incessantly

ANIME IS TEH SUC... er... sorry.

Reflex.

No... I just whipped out a bunch of other bands that I've been into lately on another thread about classic rock.

I listen to cd101 because they don't suck and because they play music that I like. Beyond that, the fact that they're independently owned, support independent and local music is just a bonus. I always thought Modest Mouse sounded like pussies. Franz Ferdinand derivative of them? I'm not hearing it. I'd need to listen to more Modest Mouse I guess. I think World Leader Pretend is a better band than both groups anyway.

A lot of the other stuff I listen to is kinda out there. Have you ever heard of Martin Dosh? I saw him in concert once. His stuff is pretty cool.

I saw him touring with Andrew Bird who's also an aquired taste.

Of late, I've been on a huge Maura Picotto kick. I listen to his stuff while I work out.

Being from Ohio, I have to give mad props to The Black Keys.

And sometimes it's just fun to geek out with They Might Be Giants, Devo, and Moxy Fruvous.

On the local scene, mad props to Shadowbox Cabaret, Kelp, and the Whiles.

EDIT: I keep trying to get Kevin Browning to listen to Peeping Tom and Wolfmother, but I don't think he'll listen to me. See what you can do. I think he'd dig them. He may even like Dungen if he can get past it being is Swedish (I think...).

My lack of knowledge of new music is basically a self imposed exile.

It's not that I have anything against new music, I just don't have a way to hear it without being exposed to the media barrage that goes with it. Without a mute button to make the commercials go away, I think the whole process has become cost prohibitive. I am simply not willing to expose myself to that kind of psychological torture on a regular basis. I 've had my share of forced entertainment, and have chosen to suffer in silence rahter than listen to the manufactured hype again, and again.

geigh... picotto's descended into complete cheese, and he was cheesy to begin with.. guy's the paul oakenfold of italian hardhouse.. he was alright when i saw him live - about 5 years ago..

i've been listening to pretty much nothing but electronic music for about 13 years now (i used to make it as a hobby too).. tons of genres underneath the umbrella of electronic music and i listen to nearly all of it - just none of the headsplitter hardcore, or fruitcake epic trance.. one that i like pretty much is the orb's newest album (okie dokie).. saw them live a month or two ago and they were incredible. little fluffy clouds may be an older song, but they remix it differently everytime they play it. this time the kompact bias was imposed and it had some solid thump to it. other than that one, i've been on a jungle kick lately, and klute, goldie and teebee have been getting lots of play in my stereo.

hope for america...

Err...?

Franz Ferdinand are part of a post-punk trend which has been going for a lot longer than Modest Mouse. they are far more like a derivative of bands like the Smiths, radiohead, pulp, suede, the more recently the libertines, etc. Stuff like Franz Ferdinand are just the new wave of the 'brit pop' sound of the mid nintys.

British Sea Power - Will have to check them out.

The Libertines - Very cool.

Idlewild - Will have to check them out.

interpol - Saw them with The Secret Machines. They both ruled. "C'mere" for teh win.

the levellers - Will have to check them out.

manic street preachers - Will have to check them out.

my vitriol - Will have to check them out.

New radicals (though not so knew anymore) - Not bad.

ocean colour scene - Will have to check them out.

pulp - Will have to check them out.

radiohead - Most horrifically over-rated band EVER. Maybe they have talent, but I've never been able to get past the lead singer's voice. He only knows two notes: whiny and emo.

snow patrol - Meh... I like what I've heard so far.

starsailor - Will have to check them out.

stereophonics - Very cool.

suede - Also cool.

semisonic - Have a CD of theirs. Haven't heard anything from them in a while.

james - Eh...

the arcade fire - Cool.

aqualung - Also cool.

babyshambles - Will have to check them out.

biffy clyro - Will have to check them out.

black rebel motorscyle club - Just not my sound, but not for lack of trying.

blur - I liked "Song number 2", but couldn't really get into much more of them.

the cranberries - The stuff that's not horrifically overplayed is excellent. What ever happened to them?

elastica - Not bad.

echo and the bunnymen - *channels Wayne* WE'RE NOT WORTHY! WE'RE NOT WORTHY!

the music - Also cool

sans trauma - Will have to check them out.

And of course, who can forget the Christian rock classic: Jesus Freak by dcTalk. Always on the faves list.

The Cooper Temple Clause, Hard-Fi, Arctic Monkeys, Muse (not so new any more but who else makes baroque-rock?), Garmana, Editors.

BTW, Manic Street Preachers turned shite after Design for Life. Starsailor are awful. Pulp and OCS rock.

BS! Lifeblood is the best album I bought all 2005 (except perhaps Porcupine Tree Stupid Dream). Oh and If You Tolerate This (1998), is a much better song than A Design For Life (1996). Indeed the entire This is My Truth Tell Me Yours album is better than Everything Must Go.

I know porcupine tree, definately a great underrated band! Ive listened to stupid dream the most too, try up the downstairs, a great album as well.

I don't listen to very much modern music, only some local artists like Devin Beu and Logan Heftel.
