Classical Rock's Greatest Song

For all those old guys, and uncharacteristicly musically tasteful youth who happen to listen to and like Classical Rock, I'm talking 60's and 70's here....

What is your favorite song, and by what band?

Mine has to be, without a doubt, American Pie by Don McLean

"I believe Christianity as I believe the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it, I see everything else."

I used to have several favorites when I was a kid until my mom pointed out that a lot of them were veiled references to drugs: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, for instance.

Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. -- Song 8:6

American Pie by Don McLean
Considering how many times they played that on the radio, and how everyone around me would start singing (usually off-key and out of time) along with it...added to how long it goes on...and on...and on...
I feel an urge to do gross bodily harm anytime I hear it now, the same response "Barbie Girl" causes my nervous system.

I'm warning you, don't say "Bye, bye Miss American Pie" if I'm anywhere close with a loaded firearm.

My favorite? Gee, I'll have to think about that.

If you never noticed (without help) then it didn't really matter, did it? Don't let other's interpretations ruin songs for you.

Well, I wasn't very old at the time. And of course, once I knew it was there, that opened a Pandora's Box and I started finding others myself pretty quickly.

That's too bad in a way. You should be able to appreciate music for what it says to you, not what it means to others.

I still love monophonic and polyphonic motets and early church music, choir and organ works especially. It doesn't bother me a bit that this was written as a part of a religious rite. It doesn't concern me that the words refer to a philosophy I don't share.

I love the music. I love the sound of a well-trained human voice. I appreciate the talent of those who wrote this music.

I'm not going to let the fact it was written by and for christians ruin my enjoyment of it.

Rock! I know, the topic is rock. I'm still thinking. Early favorite; Our House, CSN&Y.

I like "Rockin' Down the Highway" by the Doobie Brothers. Not my absolute favorite, but it's one I can think of off the top of my head.

Not sure why this came to mind first
(Maybe because I laugh every time I hear it ):
Quote:

I. Paradise

Boy:
I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Parking by the lake
And there was not another car in sight
And I never had a girl
Looking any better than you did
And all the kids at school
They were wishing they were me that night

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C'mon! Hold on tight!
C'mon! Hold on tight!

Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light

Girl:
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Ain't no doubt about it
Baby got to go and shout it
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed

Boy:
Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Baby doncha hear my heart
You got it drowning out the radio
I've been waiting so long
For you to come along and have some fun

And I gotta let ya know
No you're never gonna regret it
So open up your eyes I got a big surprise
It'll feel all right
Well I wanna make your motor run

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C'mon! Hold on tight!
C'mon! Hold on tight!

Though it's cold and lonley in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light
Paradise by the dashboard light

You got to do what you can
And let Mother Nature do the rest
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely--

We're gonna go all the way tonight
We're gonna go allt he way
An tonight's the night...

Radio Broadcast:
Ok, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker
going here, two down, nobody on, no score,
bottom of the ninth, there's the wind-up and
there it is, a line shot up the middle, look
at him go. This boy can really fly!
He's rounding first and really turning it on
now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna
try for second; the ball is bobbled out in center,
and here comes the throw, and what a throw!
He's gonna slide in head first, here he comes, he's out!
No, wait, safe--safe at second base, this kid really
makes things happen out there.
Batter steps up to the plate, here's the pitch--
he's going, and what a jump he's got, he's trying
for third, here's the throw, it's in the dirt--
safe at third! Holy cow, stolen base!
He's taking a pretty big lead out there, almost
daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher
glance over, winds up, and it's bunted, bunted
down the third base line, the suicide squeeze in on!
Here he comes, squeeze play, it's gonna be close,
here's the throw, there's the play at the plate,
holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!

II. Let Me Sleep On It

Girl:
Stop right there!
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further--!

Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
Do you love me!?
Will you love me forever!?
Do you need me!?
Will you never leave me!?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life!?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife!?
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me!!!?
Will you love me forever!!!?

Boy:
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning

Girl:
I gotta know right now!
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further
Do you love me?
And will you love me forever?

Boy:
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you my answer in the morning
Let me sleep on it!!!

Girl:
Will you love me forever?

Boy:
Let me sleep on it!!!

Girl:
Will you love me forever!!!

III. Praying for the End of Time

Boy:
I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my god and on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time!

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you!!!

Boy:
It was long ago and it was far away
and it was so much better than it is today

Girl:
It never felt so good
It never felt so right
And we were glowing like
A metal on the edge of a knife

Crossroads by Cream, from Wheels of Fire, live concert recording (edited).

DRIVING, distorted guitar by Eric Clapton, with memorable phrasing. Busting bass by Jack Bruce and inspired drumming by Ginger Baker.

Blues lyrics (Clapton sings) are a Robert Johnson creation, supposedly about his trip to the crossroads where he sold his soul to the Devil in return for the ability to wail on guitar. Clapton wails.

"Arms in the hands of the citizens may be used at individual discretion for the defense of the country, the overthrow of tyranny or private self-defense." -- John Adams

There were a lot of really awesome songs that came out of that era, I don't think I could choose just one. I'd need to choose about a thousand.

P I N K F L O Y D - The entire WYWH album, as it really shouldn't be listened to in singles.

If that's too new for ya, The Kinks "You Really Got Me" is good enough for me.

Oy.

"Hi. I'm 2006. Have we met?"

Seriously, guys, you live in the age of iTunes, file sharing* and the Internet. It's time to expand your horizons a little. Nostalgia is great and all, but the bands of today are influenced by the bands of yesterday. You're missing out on today. Here's some bands you may not have heard of that you may like:

Into Hendrix and psychadelic acid rock? Try Dungen.

Into Zepplin and others 70's rockers? You need to check out Wolfmother.

Did you like Liza strutting her stuff in Cabaret? Check out the Dresden Dolls.

Did you like happy-go-lucky songs of the 60's? Try Belle & Sebastian.

If you liked The Allman Brothers, you may dig Peeping Tom.

Were you a hippie? Then you need to check out the Flaming Lips.

Were you into Bob Marley? Are you Jewish? You have no business NOT listening to Matisyahu

Go forth and join up with this decade. Also, check out the world's coolest radio station.

Yeah, because people who can appreciate classic rock and oldies obviously don't appreciate any other forms of music.

I suppose you tell admirers of baroque music to get their heads out of the 1600s.

Touch of Grey by the Grateful dead sticks out in my head as my favorite song from the 60's/70's (not that i was alive back then)

what are they gonna do when the lights go down?
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun?
Other than tremble incessantly

Among many songs "A Brighter Shade of Pale" by Procol harem sticks out as well as;
-"Street Corner Girl"-Led Zeppelin (Originally a one sided 45 that is VERY hard to come by.)
-"Bohemian Rhapsody"-Queen, etc

Yes. People older than 40 or 50 are really up on modern music. Really. And Bu$h is a Libertarian and Hugh Hefner can't get a date.

Seriously, though, a lot of old fogies don't bother to look at what's out there today. Some do. Most don't... which is a shame, because there's a lot of great music out there you may not have heard of. I mean, come on: can you type with a straight face that you'd heard of Dungen? How about World Leader Pretend?

I'd have to say anything by Led Zepplin, but my favorite song by them would have to be Kashmir. I realized once while going up to eastview mall and listening to it, that its PERFECT merry-go-round music. If I ever had a merry-go-round, that would be what played from it. Its got the perfect beat and everything, it was like an epiphany, like one of the universes most closely gaurded secrets was revealed to me.
And no, I was not on drugs. As my friend Scott likes to say, 'My brain makes its own drugs.'

I know your type. You think, "I'll just get me a costume, rip off the neighborhood kids." Next thing you know, you've got a jet shaped like a skull with lasers on the front!
