Member removed from group

Tman has been removed from this group, because, by his own admission, he is not one of us. The revelation came when he denied the existence of a "public good".

PH: You just gave yourself away as one who has worked, or works, in the restaurant biz. 86 indeed. Do you know where the term comes from?

86? Is it from the NY Liquor code?

It may well be in the NY liquor code but in the restaurant biz it means "all out of" something. It comes from a restaurant in Paris France that prides itself on never being out of anything on its menu. When ever they got to the 86th portion of a dish, they would makes sure they wouldn't run out of it by making more. Hence if you were down to the "86" portion on something, you were technically "out of it". Thus "86" meant no more available and they had to make more so as never to be "out of something" on the menu.

Just some useless trivia.

Here's what Wikipedia says:
Quote:
# used as a verb, to "eighty-six" means to "ignore" or "get rid of". This refers to article 86 of the New York state liquor code which defines the circumstances in which a bar patron should be refused service or "86ed". Another theory has it that this is ryming slang for "nix." Interestingly, this seems to be an American coinage, unusual for ryming slang.[1]
# used in the foodservice business, meaning a restaurant is out of an item. This use originated from the famous Delmonaco Restaurant in New York City, as item #86 on their menu, their house steak, ran out often in the 19th century.

* Another explanation is that Chumley's, a famous 1900's New York speakeasy, was located at 86 Bedford St. During Prohibition, an entrance through an interior adjoining courtyard was used, as it provided privacy and discretion for customers. As was a New York tradition, the cops were on the payroll of the bar and would give a ring to the bar that they were coming for a raid. The bartender would then give the command "86 everybody!", which meant that everyone should hightail it out the 86 Bedford entrance because the cops were coming in through the courtyard door.
Maybe you should contribute your legend to the Wikipedia article, brien.

I think I should do it. How does one go about doing this? I would have to find the name of the Restaurant in France where Delmonico's might have gleaned it from as well.
