Hurricane Season 2006

After watching the utter devastation from Florida to Texas last year, and living through the Rita evacuation and occupation(lockdown) of my home town by the feds for almost a month, I wanted to start a thread to remind all who live within a few hundred miles of the coast that the official start of hurricane season is only a month away, although they are already monitoring a storm off or the carolinas.---->Hurricane season might not want to wait until June 1...

Personally, I sat in traffic for over 12 hours on the highway on the tx/la border trying to get away from the storm, only to have it(Hurricane Rita) follow me up to the Piney Woods of East TXmap I thought we would get some wind & rain but not a cat 1/2 hurricane passing directly overhead 150 miles inland and hearing my city was not going to let me get back to my home

Which brings me to the point of my post.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM RITA

DO NOT WAIT FOR THE GOV TO COME TO YOUR RESCUE-you will be waiting a long time

Have at least 1 month supply drinking water & non-perishable(sp?)food on hand

TONS OF BATTERIES AND PREFERABLY A GENERATOR-after Rita hit there was near 100 degree heat for the next 3 days. Kinda sux to sweat it out w/no respite from the heat when the only thing to do is survey the devastation, swat mosquitos, and begin to pick up the pieces.

EVEN MORE FUEL THAN BATTERIES-there was plenty of gas in the ground, but no electricity to pump it up

A FULL TOOLBOX OF HAND TOOLS + LOTS OF TARPS

Also, I don't know if its just a general sense of unease, or the fact that the 05 season stretched into 06(storm in december-january) or the huge storms hitting australia, or the forecast upswing in storm activity, but there is the sense around here(beaumont,tx) that this is just the beginning and we may have to adjust and get used to this happening every year or so.

As for myself, I learned my lessons. I will not evacuate w/the herd & and dont wait for the govt. They are not here to help.
Anybody else here have any hurricane stories. I would love to hear them. Listen and learn and all that.
Sorry for rambling, feel free to add to my incomplete hurricane supply list, blast fema, etc!

Will post pics of local Rita aftermath tomm if i can figure out how.

Wouldn't it make sense to not live near the coast if this is going to keep happening every year?

Also, why build houses out of wood as opposed to brick?

Brick is nice looking for the exterior of a house (my favorite, actually) but actually building the entire house out of brick is not smart.

Reinforced concrete homes, on the other hand, would be a smart thing to do if you had to live on the coast.

You'd still get damage through windows though, I say your idea of not living in these danger zones is better.

A tin roof helps here.

Hey, Mike. The Rita evacuation was a mess. I was visiting Houston that week.

I decided to sit inside the house I was at, 70 miles inland, and hope the eye went elsewhere. Sorry it went over to your house...

I think the Gulf coast is prabably a good place to move away from, at least out of the floodzone/stormsurge zone... If you like Texas there are nice areas further inland that aren't such a risk to your life and family..

I live in another area that gets occasional hurricanes. So far, so good with my actual location, though. They seem to go over Kauai instead...
