best and worst towns to live in in the UK

Personally, i don't have a worst town really, although i would probably say that it is Hull, simply because of its reputation...

As for the best place, however, it is undoubtedly Aberyswyth. For the moment anyway. Highest pub density in the country, per square mile that is, lots of nature all the way around, so lots of hiking and climbing i can do if i want to... The university is the best for my subject in the world, arguably... It is next to the sea, and it has a hill fort next to it, which is in pretty good condition... brilliant defenses. It even has an old broken-down castle! How cool can you get!?

It even has the most hilarious thing i have ever seen... Welsh nationalists. Sorry for those welshmen posting here, but it is just hilarious, i swear. They blocked a road by the uni one morning(there were about 4 of them, lol). Hardly anyone goes up that road at all. What is the point!? Its just hilarious, it really is, but i suppose you have to be there to see it for it to be really funny. On top of that, the people are realy nice, generally, and the guys at uni are cool. Only problem is the Union, it does some pretty crap nights sometimes... And there is also a lot of wind, but when its warm, it is welcome... Oh, and the hills... they can get annoying, since the town is at the bottom, and the uni at the top, but you get used to it, and it gets you your daily exercise...

Aber? The best? You have got to be kidding....went there a while back for a Uni Fencing match (I was studying in Bangor), and the phrase that came to mind was 'concrete jungle'.

Good places in the UK (that I've been to)...Newcastle, Edinburgh, London (particularly Soho), Newquay, Chester, Falmouth. Bangor's fun, but I wouldn't call it 'the best'.

Bad places....Reading, Slough, Bracknell, Southend, Rhyl, Luton, Blackpool, Sunderland, Birmingham.

There are more, of each, but I could be here all day.....

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

The irony being that Aberystwyth has a castle, a hillfort from the pre-Roman and loads of really old buildings.

So much for the hypothesis that its a "concrete jungle".

Like I said, that was my impression - I was stuck in the centre of the Uni, didn't see too much of the town itself, but the drive through didn't endear me too much!

I reckon any Uni student has a fairly rose-tinted impression of the town they study in - after all, they live there, they have time to find the good spots, and, if they so choose, they have a wicked social life. No doubt my mind would be changed about Aber if I came out on the piss with yourself & Indie, but I still say it's too close to see the wood from the trees.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

Best: York, Warwick, London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Middlesbrough....

    Worst: Stoke, Stoke and Stoke

Why did they not warn me Keele was in Stoke??

As for Middlesbrough...Well, the alcohol is cheap, the nights out are sweet and during summer I swear there are more hotties per square inch in the centre than anywhere else. Of course, don't leave the centre by foot if your not local...

I quite enjoyed Birmingham during my visit. There are rough parts though, I worked in an office on Bristol Rd. I felt a lot of negative energy on Bristol Rd, leaving Birmingham going up the hill. (if you know where I am talking about).

Hull was "dead nice" Luton was "dead rough" as was Stoke.

    Chris, you've been to Birmingham?

It's ok, I suppose, but it is very rough, like you said. I wouldn't like to be in Solihull at night on my own. A good friend of mine is actually from Solihull very nice guy.

I actually live about 20 min drive from Luton. I live in a town called Milton Keynes.

Yeah I was there for work. 3.5 weeks

Wolverhampton is similar to Stoke. Dead rough. I stayed and worked in the Selly Oak part. Near the University.

Please don't be jealous that our country and its towns actually have some history and culture behind them.

Name me a few American towns which has something like this in it: -

    Or maybe this: -

What do you have to compare? Some French bird sitting in the middle of a bay. Great...

Face it, you have some great stuff in America, and your history is interesting and rich... but just not on the same scale as the rest of us, and your towns... well if they were more than a couple of hundred years old, maybe it would be different.

If an American town was 200 years old they'd knock it down and put a mall there.
