    I'm not obese...

...anymore. I am now merely overweight after losing 25 lbs. I was so big that I couldn't get out of my own way. I now usually walk 3 miles a day. Before I walked from the living room to the refrigerator. When I started walking again, I had to stop 3 or 4 times in a mile because of pain in my hips and legs because of my back (3 fusions in two surgeries). Now I don't stop and rarely have pain. Stronger back and less load out front to carry.

I'm half way there after only 11 weeks. But progress is slower as time goes on.

Well congrats on the progress and keep it up. I have never had to worry about my weight, as I am excessively active and blessed with a high metabolism (and cursed with high blood pressure). However, my mother has struggled for the last 25 years with obesity. She had bariatric surgery last year and is enjoying life more than she has in well over two decades.

    Keep it up.

You'll need stamina to keep ahead of all them gals chasing after you once you slim down.

But I'm married and faithful, and have been for 40 years. Moreover, I haven't seen any gals chasing me ever.

I briefly bubbled above overweight into obese for two days. But now I'm again just overweight. Weight fluctuates up and down by a couple of pounds from day to day. That's why it is recommended that one weighs oneself weekly, rather than daily. But I understand that it goes up and down. For me, the trend is down.

Wife looking over your shoulder, eh? I get it.

Definitely good news to hear you're heading for triathalons. I'm impressed as hell. You die, you leave me that gumption will you? Be nice to die of nothing. Not sure I like the prescription for it though.

Interesting article in today's Guardian about obesity - worth reading.

Actually, many years ago there were some opportunities to cheat. I didn't because I made a promise.

Definitely good news to hear you're heading for triathalons.
That's not going to happen. I'm not allowed to run by order of my spinal surgeon. I have to do low impact exercise - like walking or pedaling my exercise bike (recumbent to reduce stress on my spine). I have to admit that in the last 2 1/2 months that I have been trying to lose weight, part of which has been walking, my back has become stronger and I have almost no pain in my legs. I now walk 1.5 miles without stopping (twice a day, when I can). 2 months ago I had to stop at least twice.

    I'm impressed as hell.
Thanks, but it's no big deal. I actually eat up to 5 times a day. If Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, and Marie Osmond can do it, so can I.

You die, you leave me that gumption will you? Be nice to die of nothing. Not sure I like the prescription for it though.
OK. I'll put that into my will tomorrow.

What do you consider obese gallo? If you're bubbling low numbers between the two that is normal, and weight charts are useless so this might be your perfect weight. Check your bmi and don't worry about comparing yourself to Terry Bradshaw or someone else. I bubble between 245/250 at 6'2" and would be considered overweight/obese but these same people claim people like Tom Cruise are overweight.

I see you are walking and I think that's great. I run only because I don't have the paitence to walk but I think it is actually better for people and their bodies as they get older....just do it everyday possible. Also try taking Spirulina (look it up) and see if it helps your metabolism and allows you to cut back on snacking or a meal while keeping your blood sugar normal. Life is good!

    Good luck.

I'm just going by a chart that I believe is based on height-weight. According to that chart I was obese - I was. According to that chart I am now merely overweight - I am.

If you're bubbling low numbers between the two that is normal, and weight charts are useless so this might be your perfect weight.
While I understand that weight fluctuates from day to day, my goal is a downward trend. But, believe me, I am not at my perfect weight. My perfect weight was probably some 46 years ago, when I was in OCS at Ft. Sill. I was 6'5" and weighed 195 to 200 lbs. I ate like a pig and ran it off every day.

Check your bmi and don't worry about comparing yourself to Terry Bradshaw or someone else.
I don't actually compare myself to Terry Bradshaw or anyone else. According to my bmi, I'm overweight.

Tom Cruise aside, you may be overweight. I'm now 6'4" (due to spine problems and surgeries) and am around 245. I'm still overweight. My younger son is 6'4" and 190-200 lbs. He runs marathons and finishes.

I see you are walking and I think that's great. I run only because I don't have the paitence to walk but I think it is actually better for people and their bodies as they get older....just do it everyday possible.
If I could run (I suspect that I can't yet), my spinal surgeon told me not to do so. Low impact exercise it the thing to do after two spinal surgeries. Walking strengthens back muscles.

Also try taking Spirulina (look it up) and see if it helps your metabolism and allows you to cut back on snacking or a meal while keeping your blood sugar normal.
I don't snack anymore. Well...not true. I snack on radishes, cauliflower, and tomatoes. No more potato chips, etc.

    Life is good!
    It is!

    Good luck.
    Thanks

I don't think there's just one criteria for this type of thing. I've got what I'd call a little gut. Compared with an anorexic I would be extremely fat, but compared with someone over 200 pounds I would be rather thin. I get plenty of exercise, but I'm trying to cut down on junkfood -- with varying success. It's like cutting out cigarettes: "This is it...just one more carton and I'm done for good!"

The article said we were on average three stone heavier than in the 'sixties. I was there, and I'm not, but the point seems to be that the food industry managed to shift the 'guilt' from sugar to fat, with the result that we are killing ourselves for their profit.

Food production is altered a lot by subsidization. Fruits and certain vegetables get less subsidization than other sectors. It's another issue where nearly all of us "have blood on our hands." I want to blame THEM, but I often enough still buy their junk. Still, I'm trying to cut down. It's harder than it sounds. Putting aside the whole "addictive foods from advertising giants" angle, old habits die hard.
