    "Hipster" Ideas

I have a few questions which I would like to ask the general forum surfer about.

    1. If you don't want to be "hipster" because everybody is doing it, does that make you hipster?

    2. Why do Hipster fashion and gay fashion look strangely similar?

    3. What psychological reason is there to attribute the need to have unpopular interests?

How about giving a definition of what a "hipster" might be. Something like this, perhaps.

hipster signifies a cultural mythology, a crystallization of a mass-mediated stereotype generated to understand, categorize, and marketize indie consumer culture, rather than an objectified group of people

They listen to good (or at least interesting) music and wear whatever they want. I'm accidentally a hipster sometimes. I think everyone is.

...but I was a hipster before it was cool.

When I hear "hipster" I think beat: Beat Generation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Is this what you're referring to?
I don't quite follow the "need for unpopular interests" or gay references.

Me, I'm an unreconstructed '70s hippie. Does that qualify me as a hipster?

Not knowing what a Hipster is and noting that TinkerGeek is new (Welcome, bro') and has yet to reach the 10 post threshold he or she needs to include links in his or her posts, I searched the "Internets" and, you know, found:

This video I particularly like because, ironically given the Hipster topic, it's out of focus.

ermmmm....I don't get it? I absolutely do not understand this definition?

Why do so many people desire to be labeled as part of a socio-clique?

I do not agree that "tribalism" in any strict sense is "in our genes."

Count me out. I just don't fit in with any "tribe".

I have been told that is one criteria.

    2. Why do Hipster fashion and gay fashion look strangely similar?
Not sure. I realize I dress in a way that would be interpreted as gay some by some. I just dress as I like and in a way I find fun.

    3. What psychological reason is there to attribute the need to have unpopular interests?
I have been called a hipster and I realize I do match many of the characteristics. I don't disdain things that are popular though. For example I like super hero movies.

As for a psychological need, I am not sure. While I do enjoy being different and unique I don't believe I seek things out for that reason.

Me either. While most humans seem to be tribal, we certainly all don't seem to be.
