    Stand with Science

Just wanted to share a link. The video and petition were organized by a graduate student group at MIT. I would encourage anyone or everyone to sign the petition, in the hopes of maintaining funding for the sciences in the United States.

The sciences are my voice when I have none. The problem is, I don't necessarily want every scientific program funded.

Hence the process of grant application, etc. Not all scientific programs are funded.

Those that are - at least by the federal government - are usually those that can provide evidence that they be materially beneficial to current or future generations.

    Granted, there are some oversights.

But given the tiny percentage of federal funding that scientific research consumes - versus the absolutely astounding contributions to the economy that those trained in the sciences make - wouldn't it be worth over-funding worthless programs than under-funding vital ones?

After all, even an over-funded program for a drug that won't work ultimately produces a scientist or two who is adept at drug synthesis, design, and characterization (not to mention structure-activity analysis, etc.), whereas an under-funded program for a drug that won't work produces nothing - because there is no money to train a scientist to look into treatment for a difficult, though druggable target.

    Pro scientia et humanitate.
