    Superstitions

Well, Happy belated big bad boogie man day. Another Friday the 13th, kicked in the pants and I trust, no one had their face eaten off by rabid Chihuahua's!

While, no one actually knows why Friday the 13th is so reviled, there have been several claims brought foreword. I would wager it had to do with Early Christians condemning some sort of pagan holiday, or god or goddess. I seems the early Christians confiscated numerous pagan holidays to fill their quotas of saved souls and willing doners to the collection plate.

I was wondering just how many superstitions have you guys collected and how many you still honer in your daily lives.

Stamp white horses to prevent bad luck. In honor of my mother.

I don't pick up pennies. I think really hard about nickles and dimes, but I do attempt to pick up quarters. But, given the condition of my back (two surgeries - three fusions), it's not a sure thing.

I can't think of any superstition I take seriously, including religious belief (which in my book is just another form of superstition). Every so often something will happen that involves a superstitious belief and just for fun and depending on my mood I may observe the superstitious response or not. But I don't take it seriously. Step on cracks, break mirrors, pick up change, I've done them all without a second thought. Since I don't believe in luck I don't play the lottery as the very real odds are against my ever winning and the state gets enough of my money as it is.

My response is very similar to Jacks. I say "bless you" (minus the god part) when someone sneezes just out of habit.

I don't say anything, which is successful so far.

There is a place for discussions like this:
Sneeze Fetish Forum > If you're alone and you have to sneeze do you.....

    I'm not of that
    world, really.

Raised southern Baptist...old habits die hard.

    I'm not of that

Wasn't on the list, but another habit from years in the food service industry...you turn your head and sneeze/ cough in your armpit or the crook of your elbow.

Heh...Here's a blast from the past you might remember from the adult section that gave me a chuckle.

Superstition or just muscle memory? I'm not sure, but to this day, if I am shooting a foul shot, I take the ball, spin bounce it out and wipe my hands, catch it, bend my knees, bounce the ball four times in front of me and then shoot. It has been my ritual since HS. I can't not do it.

All I see when I look down, something jumpin' on the ground, Scratchin' dirt, cluckin' in the barnyard -
Tell me, could that be you?

No real superstitions, except...does arachnophobia count?

Lester: Boy, you need something else outside of this.
    McNulty: Like what?
Lester: A life, Jimmy. You know what that is? It's the stuff that happens while you're waiting for moments that never come.

Christians did kind of bring around the superstition, before Christianity Friday was the sabbath day for most 'religions' but some suggest it may go back to the garden of Eden apparently eve tempted adam with the apple on Fri the 13th. Don't ask me how???

Also the Templar Knights where ambushed in dawn raids in France on a Friday the 13th, on charges of heresy, blasphemy, obscenities and homosexual practices. Although these raids were not just French but all over, no charges where ever successfully proven. For years after many were tortured for confessions.

Although like April fools day for example an exact origin cannot be found, many people to this day still believe in Friday the 13th as an unlucky day. This then furthers its unluckiness on said day. More people are less likely to use their cars on this day but the hospital admittances for motoring accidents on this day are higher than 'usual' Friday.

Is it true, who knows? But we can all claim a day off work for it yah!!!

Our word for superstition - and, I assume it is the same in most Slavic languages - in English would literally mean "Empty-faith". So if you're religious, you're supposed to try not to believe in such things.

But... how can you escape them?

The most famous for us is probably don't sit on cold stone or your ovaries will freeze and you'll never have children.
