Mohammed most popular name in Britain.

Mohammed is now the most popular name for baby boys ahead of Jack and Harry | Mail Online
Mohammed has become the most popular name for newborn boys in Britain.

It shot up from third the previous year, overtaking Jack, which had topped the list for the past 14 years but was relegated to third spot.

Olivia topped the list for little girls for the second year in a row, behind Ruby and Chloe.

A total of 7,549 newborns were given 12 variations of the Islamic prophet Mohammed’s name last year, such as Muhammad and Mohammad.

The official list, which covers all births in 2009 in England and Wales, has Mohammed at number 16 but this does not include the many different spellings, which are all ranked separately.

When they are added in, Mohammed zooms all the way up to top spot for the first time.
Well that will make it easier to spot a british person, just shout out, "Hey! Mohammed."

I'd rather name my kid mohammed than olivia. My girlfriend's friends insist on making that her nickname and it makes me temporarily not want to have sex with her.

    For how long?

Seriously, it is an insult to any male child as Mohammed is directly linked to ignorance, stupidity and backwardness (Islam), but then again, a name is a name. So if its not because of the religion or religious related (which is insulting towards the poor child) then I see no issue.

I never met one person called Mohammed here in the UK myself, neither Wales, England or the Channel Islands.

Dont misunderstand, it is purely because of the religious connection, I mean to name your child after a backwards ignorant religious "prophet" is kind of insulting towards your child. I would say the same about "Jesus".

I bet it was, but just after you finished, you where back on track, right?

If I'm correct your name comes from a theocratic absolute monarch who made his throne by slaughtering others. I'm named Nathan, after one of those backwards prophets, I don't think our parents meant any disrespect.

Indeed, but this has nothing to do with religion. To sp[ecifically name your child after a religious person is. And you are just jealous because I got a D in my name

It's arguable that Mohammed is a cultural name as well as religious, just like David. There are a lot of Jew named David for religious reasons, and a lot named David just because it's a good name

Jee-ZUSS! I find this shocking (if true).
What does this say about the demographic situation in the UK?

Nothing much. While it's true that muslims has a higher natality than the average population, I think it's due to the fact that there is about 150 million people today who are named Muhammad, which means 1 in 10 muslims, which means 1 in 5 male muslims. Meanwhile, traditionnal names in western culture are a mix of biblical and vernacular names: we just have a greater variety than muslims.

But don't worry: all my great-uncles are either called Paul, Peter, John, Simon or James. I'm the only one in my family whose given name has a latin root, the rest comes straight from the Old Testament.

    Just trolling by.
