| Post-Nuclear War Survival Hello. I'm new here. I don't know what debate area to put this, so I'm putting it here. I did a project like this in my history class, so why not put it here? Three days ago, nuclear war broke out around the world with massive attacks in all heavily populated areas. For the first 24 hours, radio broadcasts reported tremendous damage and loss of life in all areas, including the total annihilation of most of Earth's human population. Many major cities, including Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, Moscow, Paris, and London have been totally destroyed. For the past 48 hours, there have been no broadcasts. Fortunately, the people listed below were able to reach a fallout shelter in time to take cover and survive the initial devastation. There's food and water and supplies to last for a while. Several people were caught outside at the time of a nearby nuclear blast at a military base and were wounded. Despite their injuries, they managed to get into the shelter. The shelter has a medical facility for emergency surgeries and a large amount of medical supplies. It also has a library, exercise facility, cafeteria, sleeping quarters, entertainment area, and restrooms. You must assume that those in the shelter are, as far as you know, the only human survivors of the war. Here is the dilemma: There are twenty people in the fallout shelter (ten men and ten women), but there is not enough water or other supplies to keep them all alive until the atmosphere is safe and the radiation levels go down. To survive, the people must stay inside the fallout shelter for at least three months. The problem is that if all of them stay in the shelter, all of them will starve to death or dehydrate. There are supplies enough to allow twelve of the twenty people to survive. Your task is to decide, based on the information given, which people will be allowed to remain (and live), and which people will be required to leave the shelter (and die). Those who are selected to leave will do so peacefully, but some have family members with them and may refuse to be separated. At issue is the survival of humans on Earth. The bottom line is that if human beings are to repopulate the Earth, such repopulation will begin with those survivors chosen by you. Carefully evaluate all information about each of the twenty persons. Consider their health, occupations, injuries, age, and sex. Then decide which twelve will be allowed to stay in the shelter and which eight must leave. 1. James Stanley Age: 43 Health: good Injuries: minor cuts on left arm Occupation: ex-military officer, currently a farmer 2. Heather Stanley Age: 13 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: middle school student Notes: Heather is the daughter of James Stanley. With James and Heather being the only surviving members of their family, James refuses to be separated from his daughter. He has said, “I lost my wife and son, I will not lose my daughter!” 3. Gerald White Age: 35 Health: fair Injuries: right leg fractured Occupation: military construction laborer 4. Debbie Sanders Age: 38 Health: good Injuries: minor 1st degree burn on forehead Occupation: psychologist Notes: Debbie is 4 months pregnant with twins. 5. Michael Turman Age: 27 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: heavy construction and welding worker 6. Julie Wu Age: 30 Health: good Injuries: small piece of broken glass embedded in left kneecap Occupation: nuclear scientist Notes: Julie is highly intelligent and knows almost everything about nuclear weapons and fallout. Julie has admitted to working in a place where nuclear weapons were manufactured, but worked in a different department. She is engaged to be married to Michael Turman. 7. Roger Turman Age: 34 Health: good Injuries: left arm fractured Occupation: heavy construction and welding worker Notes: Roger is Michael Turman's brother and Julie Wu's brother-in-law to-be. His broken arm was the result of a construction accident and is very close to healing. 8. Tammy Reno Age: 19 Health: good Injuries: piece of glass embedded in right hand, sprained left ankle Occupation: convenience store worker 9. Albert Wilson Age: 80 Health: poor Injuries: none Occupation: retired bank president Notes: Albert is showing signs of either becoming senile or developing Alzheimer's disease, resulting in his poor health. 10. Jennifer Gray Age: 25 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: college music teacher 11. Cody Gray Age: 12 Health: fair Injuries: massive gash on forehead, right arm fractured Occupation: elementary school student Notes: Cody is the brother of Jennifer Gray. They too are the only surviving members of their family and Jennifer is now technically Cody's legal guardian. Jennifer absolutely refuses to be separated from her brother and would be inconsolable if her brother has to leave. Jennifer has guaranteed that Cody will not be a burden and has assured the other survivors that if he does get sick, she will take care of him and the others won't have to do anything. 12. Richard Davis Age: 37 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: doctor 13. Carolyn Blaylock Age: 32 Health: poor Injuries: none Occupation: registered nurse Notes: Carolyn is in shock, which is the cause of her poor health. She lost her family, her home, her friends, and all her colleagues at the hospital she worked at. She is an associate of Richard Davis and was voted the second best nurse at the hospital she worked at. 14. Fred Frederick Age: 54 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: US Navy electronics technician 15. Aaron Manning Age: 18 Health: fair Injuries: three fractured ribs Occupation: college student 16. Elizabeth Drake Age: 31 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: high school history teacher 17. Lisa Crawford Age: 16 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: high school student 18. Isaac Stewart Age: 49 Health: very poor Injuries: serious 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th degree burns to over 20% of the body, massive gash on left arm with a piece of metal shrapnel deeply embedded, left side of face charred completely black from facing the thermal pulse of the nuclear blast, fractured jaw, permanent blindness from looking at the flash of the nuclear explosion Occupation: taxi driver 19. Maureen Wilda Age: 40 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: police officer 20. Barbara Atkins Age: 36 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: survival expert & registered nurse Notes: Barbara knows how to survive. She has been in some of the most harshest environments imaginable including Mount Everest, Siberia, the Sahara Desert, Antarctica, the Arctic Circle, and Death Valley. Despite only being a nurse for two years, her nursing skills are still fresh in her head. Let's begin the debate. Do it like this: (Name) (Keep or Throw?) Reason: Again, I don't know where else to put this. |

| Maybe we should ask Dr Strangelove. Sorry not to really get into this, but my question is: Who would want to survive? (Also, I think radio broadcasts would be technically impossible following a conflagration on that scale.) | I hate to go technical on your story, but people could usually begin to make limited excursions out of a shelter after a few days and radiation levels begin to approach normal after only a few weeks. I think the shelter would be one hardship but would continue afterward as your community/society is plunged into chaos. Every man for himself fighting for necessities, at least for a time. How many people here know you can make your own radmeter out of common kitchen materials? |

| Pissed Off Atheist | 1. James Stanley Age: 43 Health: good Injuries: minor cuts on left arm Occupation: ex-military officer, currently a farmer Keep. Knows how to farm and, judging by an ex-military background, possesses numerous survival skills and is likely very strong. 2. Heather Stanley Age: 13 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: middle school student Notes: Heather is the daughter of James Stanley. With James and Heather being the only surviving members of their family, James refuses to be separated from his daughter. He has said, “I lost my wife and son, I will not lose my daughter!” Keep. Package deal with #1. Provides genetic diversity, potentially providing a number of children and, being in excellent condition and at an age where she is able to help out in a post-apocalyptic society, is unlikely to be a significant burden. 3. Gerald White Age: 35 Health: fair Injuries: right leg fractured Occupation: military construction laborer Keep. Fracture will heal, and being a laborer is likely to be strong enough to help out. 4. Debbie Sanders Age: 38 Health: good Injuries: minor 1st degree burn on forehead Occupation: psychologist Notes: Debbie is 4 months pregnant with twins. Discard. If there are only enough food and supplies for twelve people, the addition of twins would severely complicate matters. While a psychologist would be useful, her skills aren't very handy for survival. In the post-apocalyptic society, strength is too important. I would trust to human ability to persevere in the face of tragedy. 5. Michael Turman Age: 27 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: heavy construction and welding worker Keep. Strong, healthy and young. 6. Keep. Essential to the situation. Given her intellect and knowledge of nuclear fallout, will likely be very beneficial. Keep. Close to healing, he will be an invaluable asset. 8. Tammy Reno Age: 19 Health: good Injuries: piece of glass embedded in right hand, sprained left ankle Occupation: convenience store worker Young, healthy, and female. While not possessing any particular useful trait, she adds genetic diversity and is young enough to help out. 9. Albert Wilson Age: 80 Health: poor Injuries: none Occupation: retired bank president Notes: Albert is showing signs of either becoming senile or developing Alzheimer's disease, resulting in his poor health. Discard. This man would not likely survive long even if he were kept, and has no skills useful in a post-apocalyptic society. 10. Jennifer Gray Age: 25 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: college music teacher Discard. As important as culture is in society, the priority is survival. Since she is unwilling to part with her brother, this is the final straw. 11. Discard. Burden to his sister, resulting in not one but two unproductive members of society. The degree of injury is a major question. 12. Richard Davis Age: 37 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: doctor Keep. Obviously a doctor is highly useful. 13. Discard, unless her psychological state is able to be remedied. 14. Fred Frederick Age: 54 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: US Navy electronics technician Discard. Is getting on in years, and has no special skills useful in a post-apocalyptic society. 15. Aaron Manning Age: 18 Health: fair Injuries: three fractured ribs Occupation: college student Keep. The ribs will heal, and being a college student is likely reasonably intelligent and adds genetic diversity. What's his major? 16. Elizabeth Drake Age: 31 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: high school history teacher Keep. Reasonably young, healthy, and female. 17. Lisa Crawford Age: 16 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: high school student Keep. Young, healthy and female. 18. Isaac Stewart Age: 49 Health: very poor Injuries: serious 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th degree burns to over 20% of the body, massive gash on left arm with a piece of metal shrapnel deeply embedded, left side of face charred completely black from facing the thermal pulse of the nuclear blast, fractured jaw, permanent blindness from looking at the flash of the nuclear explosion Occupation: taxi driver Discard. Of little worth to a post-apocalyptic society. In a society where medical care will be very poor, this man is extremely unlikely to survive. Is also at an age where productivity begins to decrease significantly, even if he weren't permanently disabled. 19. Maureen Wilda Age: 40 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: police officer Discard. Approaching the age of being unproductive. Provides no special skills for survival. 20. Keep. Extremely valuable for the preservation of medical techniques and survival skills. |

| 1. James Stanley Age: 43 Health: good Injuries: minor cuts on left arm Occupation: ex-military officer, currently a farmer Keeper. Farmers and fighters will be useful. 2. Heather Stanley Age: 13 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: middle school student Notes: Heather is the daughter of James Stanley. With James and Heather being the only surviving members of their family, James refuses to be separated from his daughter. He has said, “I lost my wife and son, I will not lose my daughter!” Keeper. I'd like to keep the officer/farmer. 3. Gerald White Age: 35 Health: fair Injuries: right leg fractured Occupation: military construction laborer Dead 1. Injured too severely. 4. Debbie Sanders Age: 38 Health: good Injuries: minor 1st degree burn on forehead Occupation: psychologist Notes: Debbie is 4 months pregnant with twins. Keeper. The world will need new people and a 1st degree burn is nothing. 5. Michael Turman Age: 27 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: heavy construction and welding worker Keeper. Younger and fitter than the first person I killed. 6. Keeper. She's useful. Keeper. The injury is not life-threatening and will require minimal treatment. 8. Tammy Reno Age: 19 Health: good Injuries: piece of glass embedded in right hand, sprained left ankle Occupation: convenience store worker Dead 2. Worthless individual with mild injuries. 9. Albert Wilson Age: 80 Health: poor Injuries: none Occupation: retired bank president Notes: Albert is showing signs of either becoming senile or developing Alzheimer's disease, resulting in his poor health. Dead 3. This one is a no-brainer. Literally. 10. Jennifer Gray Age: 25 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: college music teacher Dead 4. Not that I wouldn't keep a 25 year old with a skill that might help morale, but there's no room. 11. Dead 5. 12. Richard Davis Age: 37 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: doctor Keeper. We're going to need doctors. 13. Keeper. She may die almost immediately and leave us with a safety margin in our supplies, or she'll stay alive and be very useful. 14. Fred Frederick Age: 54 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: US Navy electronics technician Dead 6. Old, few electronics in this post-nuclear world. 15. Aaron Manning Age: 18 Health: fair Injuries: three fractured ribs Occupation: college student Dead 7. The ribs will be a pain and he has no useful skills. 16. Elizabeth Drake Age: 31 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: high school history teacher Dead 8. Not useful enough. 17. Lisa Crawford Age: 16 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: high school student Dead 9. Not useful enough. 18. Isaac Stewart Age: 49 Health: very poor Injuries: serious 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th degree burns to over 20% of the body, massive gash on left arm with a piece of metal shrapnel deeply embedded, left side of face charred completely black from facing the thermal pulse of the nuclear blast, fractured jaw, permanent blindness from looking at the flash of the nuclear explosion Occupation: taxi driver Dead 10. He's going to die anyway and it will be a while before we have taxis to drive. He will know the city but saving his life will be difficult and it'll be a different city after the bomb. 19. Maureen Wilda Age: 40 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: police officer Keeper. We need fighters. 20. Keeper. Obviously the most useful person here. Despite being the resident cold bastard that wasn't easy. It's a complicated problem with some tough choices. | Oopsies. If Tammy the convenience store clerk and Jennifer the music teacher aren't too irradiated they can come back in now. | I forgot to add my input. Here are my opinions: 1. James Stanley Age: 43 Health: good Injuries: minor cuts on left arm Occupation: ex-military officer, currently a farmer Keep. He knows a lot about the soil, so he can help plant seeds and gardens. You don't want to separate family. 3. Gerald White Age: 35 Health: fair Injuries: right leg fractured Occupation: military construction laborer Throw. We already have a construction worker. 4. Debbie Sanders Age: 38 Health: good Injuries: minor 1st degree burn on forehead Occupation: psychologist Notes: Debbie is 4 months pregnant with twins. Keep. We're going to need someone like her. Staying in a shelter for 3 months might cause mental problems and Debbie can help with that. Plus, she has two more coming. 5. Michael Turman Age: 27 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: heavy construction and welding worker Keep. Great health and can help rebuild the world and has a fiancée. 6. Keep. She knows a lot about this subject, But if she worked in a department where she actually helped build bombs, it would be a throw away for sure, since we wouldn't want anyone in the shelter who knows how to build them. Keep. Two construction workers are better than one and his arm is healing perfectly. 8. Tammy Reno Age: 19 Health: good Injuries: piece of glass embedded in right hand, sprained left ankle Occupation: convenience store worker Keep. Her work skills may not mean anything, but she is young and in good health. 9. Albert Wilson Age: 80 Health: poor Injuries: none Occupation: retired bank president Notes: Albert is showing signs of either becoming senile or developing Alzheimer's disease, resulting in his poor health. Definite throw for obvious reasons. 10. Jennifer Gray Age: 25 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: college music teacher Keep. She can help with boredom issues. 11. Keep. I don't think that the others could force Cody to leave the shelter. Jennifer is now his legal guardian and makes the big decisions for him since he's under 18. The others can't force him to leave or anything, since they're not his parents. If they say that he has to leave, but Jennifer says no, then that's too bad because they have no say in it. 12. Richard Davis Age: 37 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: doctor Absolute keep. We need doctors in this situation. 13. Throw. Shock can be easily recovered from, but it may take a while. Plus, we already have a nurse. 14. Fred Frederick Age: 54 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: US Navy electronics technician Throw. Electronics won't work. 15. Aaron Manning Age: 18 Health: fair Injuries: three fractured ribs Occupation: college student Throw. No useful skills. 16. Elizabeth Drake Age: 31 Health: excellent Injuries: none Occupation: high school history teacher Keep. We need teachers to teach the new generation about the world before. 17. Lisa Crawford Age: 16 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: high school student Probably throw. She has no family and may want to leave the shelter, anyway. I know I would. 18. Isaac Stewart Age: 49 Health: very poor Injuries: serious 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th degree burns to over 20% of the body, massive gash on left arm with a piece of metal shrapnel deeply embedded, left side of face charred completely black from facing the thermal pulse of the nuclear blast, fractured jaw, permanent blindness from looking at the flash of the nuclear explosion Occupation: taxi driver Definite throw. Too badly hurt. Taxi drivers won't mean anything. 19. Maureen Wilda Age: 40 Health: good Injuries: none Occupation: police officer Keep. She can keep the law and order in the shelter. Plus, all officers carry a gun and she can whip it out in case things get out of hand. 20. A definite keep. She knows how to survive. She'd be an easy replacement for Carolyn Blaylock. | They made a movie about this type of scenario...people trapped in a bunker after a nuclear Holocaust...in the end it was just an experiment... an experiment that went horribly wrong... forget the name of the movie though. ............................................................. Let's assume your facts are correct...that the bunker did not have radiation suits or other means to go outside...and they were trapped together for the entire period...and that the supplies were as limited as you say...which would be absurd but we'll go for it... you would still not have to kill anyone...or force them out... we're only taking about 3 months here... a person can go without food ( as with hunger strikes ) for about 40 days if necessary....if each person committed themselves to going without food for 30 days in that 3 month period that would greatly extend their food supply...that's only 10 days out of every month...realistically they could go every second day without eating...15 days each month with no ill effects. So...you end up essentially having to only feed 10 people for that period....because people are only eating every two days. A simple adjustment here n' there and I'm sure you could stretch the food supply to accommodate everyone for the entire period. That means the only real issue is water. Which could be resolved by purifying pee. Again we're only talking about 3 months...I'm sure everyone could be accommodated for that short a period. |

| Ahhh....The faded memories. We had a similar exercise in 9th grade health class. I don't recall the health of the individuals being mentioned, just their occupations and ages. IMO, you couldn't make a determination based on someone's occupation or their education. To me, there's a lot more to a person than their job and their certification. (Fight Club anyone?) I argued that you'd have to know more about their individual personalities. I felt group dynamics would play a more important part in the decision making. Apparently the teacher wasn't impressed with my argument and told me I had a chip on my shoulder. ![]() The next day I came to class with a block of wood taped to my shoulder...I was promptly sent to the principals office~ If only in my own mind did I make my point... The woman lacked a sense of humor. Not a person I'd pick to re-populate the Earth. If I'm the only witness to your madness offer me some words to balance out what I see and what I hear. 10,000 Maniacs |

| Pissed Off Atheist | Well, the point of these exercises is a rational examination of the traits and qualities of those to be saved. You're trying to look forward to the future where those qualities will be necessary, otherwise everyone dies. In a real situation, I think I would never be able to send little 12 year old Cody out into the fallout zone. I don't think I would even consider it. There are certain inhumanities that are just beyond any positive benefits, even survival. |

| I know/knew the point of the exercise. That's my point...So, everyone dies? Who's to say one person is better than another? I was being honest with my assessment. I needed more traits/qualities to to go on. I once worked for a banker who constantly bounced checks. Just because you have a degree, doesn't mean you have common sense. IMO, you can't be sure those picked would be successful. The pregnant woman saved could possibly spontaneously abort the twins, die giving birth,or they could have genetic defects, the construction workers could be lazy, etc...you get the picture. Maybe I'm just argumentative? If I'm the only witness to your madness offer me some words to balance out what I see and what I hear. 10,000 Maniacs |

| Well. .. I'd also want to know if any were vegetarians... because we all know the meat on vegetarians is much tastier than on meat eaters...which would you rather eat a lion or a deer ![]() Hopefully at least two of them are veggies...just in case. |

we generally dislike the taste of animals that feed on meat, such as lions, tigers, wolves, etc... exceptions apply, as always, some people do like the taste of dog...for example... and we generally really dislike the taste of animals/creatures that are scavengers...which explains why pigeons and seagulls roam around free when they could be used to feed every homeless or poor person in the Country. If pigeons and seagulls tasted yummy...we'd have an abundant food supply | |
