I was thinking that the best way for anyone to develop their arguing skills would be to switch sides, and try and argue as passionately for an entirely opposing view. It'll give you a better idea of what your opponents are thinking, and thus how you can fight it later. It may also change your views, or hopefully at least broaden them a little.

So I suggest we start a few topics where all posters have to post arguments from positions other than their own, preferably opposing views. It'll take a little more discipline when it comes to posting, I know there'll be a temptation to just go sarcastic, but as long as people stick to proper arguments, it should work well.

I don't have time right now to start one, damned sleep is catching up and i'm feeling sick from all the coffee, but I'll post topic titles with (RR) at the end.

Great idea! I'd love to do just that.
I'd love to try and explain things like "why the war in Iraq was a good move" or something like that. ^__________^

That is great training for any writer's potential. My grandmother, a former journalist in college, once told me that she used to do just that and it made her a much better arguer. I think that I will make a second login and for every opinion I profess, I'll write an antithesis of it for kicks. Thanks for the idea Adams

    Funny, but off-topic. Still, funny.

. . . whenever any government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its foundations on such principles and organizing its powers in such forms as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.

People talk politics at parties? You sure this happens? The most intellectual conversation I have at parties are usually stuff like "Is eating snot healthy?" or whether people can tell if you piss in their beer.

Role reversal sounds interesting. I can do it, and I'd even be telling the truth! I was a hardline Communist from the age of 6-13. Junior leader in the Young Pioneers (it was China's youth organisation), I even have some badges. Then I decided communism didn't really make sense, so I went to fascism, then nationalism, then libertarian capitalism.

    How about this topic:

Argue on the Iraq war, from the perspective of Bush or Kerry, but realistically (don't say "I want to kill people haha").

Ideological loyalty is the act of giving your soul to a vague concept, to be manipulated by people smarter than you.

This is your heavy artillery, for when your opponent is obviously right and you are spectacularly wrong. Bring Hitler up subtly. Say: "That sounds suspiciously like something Adolf Hitler might say" or "You certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler."

    Person: ________ is Hitler!
Me: *boggles, searches for millions of dead*

I actually use Latin abbreviations quite often online. =)

To G. Adams I would say that this is something that anyone any good at arguing already does, but is still quite amusing, especially when you have those who feel very strongly posting the other way. Quite funny. ; )
