I don't know if anyones brought this up before, but all well.

It’s like a wedding but with a twist: Young women exchange rings, take vows and enjoy a first dance…with their dads. “Purity balls” are the next big thing in the save-it-till-marriage movement. Smart or scary?

The articles long, but basically to summarize: fathers vow to help their daughters stay virgins till marriage. The girls who sign them are home schooled and sheltered - to help them stay pure. For some of these girls even just kissing or dancing with a boy is out till they're married.

I think it's weird, I mean saving sex till marriage is one thing but kissing seems a little excessive.

What's everyone else think?

I think that's some serious over protection right there. When they finally exit such sheltered lives, they will find the world to be much different then waht they grew up in.

Yeah having the virgin girl to marry may sound better on paper than it would be in reality. But I wouldn't know.

I've found that many *girls of loose morals* have come from over protective or very religious parents. I mean the old reverands daughter is a pretty old concept!

Jeez, it's like a revival of Gone with the Wind for straight kids.

This is one of those social issues I feel uncomfortable chiming in on since I'll very likely never be a father to a young girl and unlikely to ever be a daughter to an older man. It provides good fodder for gay comedians who like to talk about the weird mating rituals of straight people.

It seems harmless enough as long as it's congenial and not a forced situation. But won't it create even more guilt if the promise gets broken, thus leading to disfunction within the family? It seems like the opportunity to have this come to a bad end for many people is pretty great.

Not kissing or dancing until marriage? That's far to overprotective. Home schooled just to stay "pure"? I agree with Aussie, a lot of girls with loose morals are indeed from over protective families, and that's going to happen with a lot of these girls.

I feel an “Only in America,” moment coming on. That is really creepy, why would anyone want to control their children’s sexuality to that level, what next, the return of the chastity belt and what about their sons, is it okay for them to go off fornicating?
