A local face of illegal immigration

The actual title of the article was just too long!

Mexican restaurant owner, managers and employees picked up in sweep of immigrant smuggling operation

The Buffalo News: Home: Mexican restaurant owner, managers and employees picked up in sweep of immigrant smuggling operation

Immigration agents and local law enforcement in five states today arrested the Depew owner of seven Mexican restaurants, 11 restaurant managers and 45 illegal aliens in a scheme that authorities said involved smuggling workers from Mexico to work for low wages in the restaurants.

Okay, so, how did this illegal immigrant manage to get enough money to become the owner of 11 restaurants and various apartment buildings??????

Are you guys for real?

How about he got the money to own these restaurants by working for it, you racists? Give me a break... The article says he violated both immigration and wage laws, nothing else.

Do you say the same things when Chinese immigrants own 3 buffets?

Now that's the kind of Immigrant we should be allowing in, so long as he hires legal inhabitants.

Only if they came here illegally.

Coming here illegally does not equal drug runner or government handout recipient. Illegal immigrants can't get government handouts, so that's even more ridiculous.

Agreed. How stupid is it that because a guy didn't go through a completely arbitrary, completely malum prohibitum process of coming here written by racists and fear-mongers, that now this successful business is probably doomed?

Think of all the tax revenue that would have been collected if they merely made coming here legally easy enough that it removed the incentive to do it illegally.

New York restaurant owner among 11 charged with harboring in ICE probe
45 illegal alien workers arrested on immigration violations at owner's seven restaurants

BUFFALO, N.Y. - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents arrested 11 individuals today for conspiring to harbor illegal aliens who were smuggled into the United States to work in Mexican restaurants in four states.

The United States Attorney for the Western District of New York, Terrance P. Flynn, and Julie L. Myers, Assistant Secretary for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announced the arrests Wednesday morning. The defendants are charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, primarily undocumented Mexican nationals, who were smuggled into the country to fill jobs at seven Mexican restaurants.

The 11 suspects were taken into custody at the following locations: six in the Western District of New York, one in Bradford, Pa, two in W Va., and two in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Those arrested include:

Jorge Delarco of Depew, N.Y., owner of all seven restaurants;
Javier Banda, of Depew, N.Y., restaurant manager;
Sergio Resendiz, of Salamanca, N.Y., restaurant manager;
Maurilio Feria, of Alleghany, N.Y., restaurant manager;
Jesus Escalante, of Dunkirk, N.Y., restaurant manager;
Honorio Banda, of Bradford, Pa., restaurant manager;
Alberto Antimo, of New Martinsville, W.Va., restaurant manager;
Miguel Antimo, of Dunkirk, N.Y., restaurant manager;
Alejandro Garcia, of Wheeling, W.Va., restaurant manager; and
Alvaro Soto, of Willoughby, Ohio, restaurant manager.
"Employers who exploit illegal alien labor to reap greater profits for themselves can expect to pay a high price for their greed," said Julie L. Myers, Assistant Secretary of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "Whether the violator is a multinational corporation or a small business, ICE is aggressively targeting employers who use illegal alien workers to gain an unfair business advantage and take jobs away from legal workers."

In addition to the 11 criminal arrests, 45 illegal aliens were detained at 10 different sites in four states. They will be processed for removal on administrative immigration violations.

Today's operation, which involved approximately130 ICE agents and 30 state and local law enforcement officers, is the result of an investigation that began in May 2006. The U.S. Attorney noted that his office is coordinating closely with the U.S. Attorneys in Atlanta, Ga., Wheeling W.Va., Cleveland, Ohio, and Erie, Pa.

As part of the operation, ICE agents and local officers executed search warrants at the seven restaurants, six residences occupied by the owners and managers of the restaurants, and 12 apartments used to house undocumented aliens. The Mexican restaurants targeted in the investigation are located in four states. They include:

El Caporal Mexican Restaurant, Cheektowaga, N.Y.;
Azteca Mexican Food Cantina, Vineyard Drive, Dunkirk, N.Y.;
Don Lorenzo Mexican Restaurant, Allegany, N.Y.;
La Herradura Mexican Restaurant, Bradford, Pa.;
Jalapeno Loco Mexican Restaurant in Mentor, Ohio;
Nogales Mexican Restaurant in Wheeling, W.Va.; and
El Caporal Restaurant in New Martinsville, W.Va.
In addition, ICE agents searched a home connected to the Delarco organization in Marietta, Ga., for cash the defendant may have skimmed from his restaurants.

The Cheektowaga Police Department, the New York State Police, the U.S. Department of Labor, and Customs and Border Protection's Office of the Border Patrol all assisting ICE agents during the ICE operation in Western New York. Other federal, state and local partners assisted the ICE operations in Pa, Ohio, W.Va., and Ga.

I agree, then disagree. He is innovative and entrepreneurial. His workers who he "smuggled in" are nothing but indentured servants.

A reflection of our own history?

The illegal immigrant status only assures exploitability. In addition, it severely retsricts basic principles of free trade, including the right of labor to organize and to move with considerable freedom.

Maybe you should try reading what people write instead of so damned stupidly assuming that people are saying things they're not saying.

I didn't say one damned thing about these people being drug runners. What I did ask, though, was this:

Okay, so, how did this illegal immigrant manage to get enough money to become the owner of 11 restaurants and various apartment buildings?

If someone comes here legally and manages to become the owner of 11 restaurants and various apartment buildings, I think that's great. But, damn it, Tivodan, this guy is here illegally. He's a criminal. He has committed at least one crime. You, of all people, should know that.

Do you know he didn't? Statistical probability suggests he did, since "immigrants commit proportionately no more than and possibly even fewer crimes than native-born citizens." -- Center for Immigration Studies

So he came here illegally and carved a piece of the American dream. His legal alternative would be to not be working back in his home country, not feeding his family, while still waiting for legal permission to enter this country.

Yep, sounds like a real thug ot me.

Well that's good to know. Obviously that logic applies to these folks as well, and knowing that, the FBI and ATF should stop pussyfootin' around, go in there with guns ready, get them damn criminals and throw 'em in prison!!

Don'tcha think!!

yeah, a true hero, right?? He comes here illegally, acquires a restaurant, hires other illegals, pays them sub-standard wages, and becomes a success competing against citizens that follow the rules. Sure, the new version of The American Dream - lie, cheat, steal, bend the rules.

Success is measured solely by the wealth one manages to accumulate.

There is no way he could earn enough cash with a low education that is so very very common among illegals, or get a job a higher education would warrant. Most likely he purchased the restraunt chain jointly with other illegals, or as said before he was a drug runner.

I have to agree with you. People are always saying things like "its better for our economy to have low level workers that aren't paid a lot" or "we're doing them a favor". We are not helping them out by paying them incredibly low wages, and we are not doing ourselves a favor by employing another country or workers who cannot be taxed and are likely taking government benefits. COME HERE LEGALLY.
