US slips to 11th in Beer per Capita

The world's top 25 beer countries in 2005, with liters consumed per capita:

1. Czech Republic 160.5
2. Ireland 127.4
3. Germany 109.9
4. Austria 105.8
5. Belgium 98.6
6. United Kingdom 95.7
7. Denmark 92.5
8. Slovakia 92.4
9. Australiia 87.7
10. Venezuela 83.3
11. United States 82.8
12. Spain 82.1
13. Finland 81.7
14. Hungary 80.1
15. New Zealand 77.3
16. Netherlands
17. Poland
18. Portugal
19. Canada
20. Romania
21.Bulgaria
22.Russia
23. Switz
24. South Africa

We're going to have to do something about this. Ireland and the UK I understand, but Belgium???

Come on, we can do better than that men.

Hell that's a poor average for the UK. I'm sure I double that number, if we add in cider too it's ridiculous. I drank over 120 units in freshers week alone this year, and I missed the first night of it too.

What the hell is "freshers week"?

And, ya know, factor in all the old stalwarts and teetotalers from Britain's yesteryear... there are plenty of Brits who don't throw down half their salary for pints at the pub, right?

The week of drunken mayhem preceeding the beginning of an academic year of university.

Ah. In the US, that week stretches all the way through the semester and beyond.

If you think that, then you don't understand freshers...

My average weekly intake we worked out around 80 units (mostly stella, magners and jaegers) but freshers is something special. I made it 4 and a half days of drinking this year before my then defenseless body succombed to freshers flu and put me down for the rest of the week. I'm hoping to to push that 120 units to 150 this year, and by god I'll do it, it'll just take some organisation.

What are we drinking? hard liquor? wine? I like wine, but it's only for the dinnertable, really. Liquor is only for bars, beer is the rest of the time.

As in, (52X80=) 4,160 liters of alcohol per year?

I think it's time to stop the charade. Apparently, we should all be making fun of Czech for drinking everyone under the table.

One unit isn't equal to one litre. There's 3 units to a pint of stella, and a little over 2 pints to a litre. So 80/3= over 26 pints a week, very much doable. That's two nights drinking on it's own, so my target of 150 should be achievable.

So 13 liters a week X 52 = 676 liters. Interesting. I think I just found a new case for the VPI.

Ah well I'm afraid I only drink like that during term time. So it would be more 13x35=455litres

And I must add this is not an uncommon or freakish amount for a student, before people assume I'm either an alcoholic, a liar or pissed at the time I wrote those numbers.

I think those numbers went down when I stopped drinking. I didn't realize I was supporting an industry, otherwise I wouldn't have stopped.

I should get an award or something.

You, and Paris Hilton couldn't be more deserving of useless awards:)

BTW, you could just buy yourself an award. As a matter of fact, I bought myself three medals and a silver trophy cup from Crown Awards. I even got them engraved. Pretty cool.

but Belgium???
Completely understandable - the Belgians have a flourishing beer industry. Big tradition of monasteries getting v.serious about their home-brew. Not a beer drinker myself, but I'm given to understand that certain Belgian beers are pretty good.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

I'm too humble for an actual award. Just me knowing my achievement is enough.

Just because it's not uncommon doesn't mean you're not an alcoholic. Just means you've got lots of company to share your enlarged liver and gin blossom nose.

455 liters/year is still 2.5 pints a day - I don't even drink that much in water!

Sure, but we invented the pony keg, the beer bong, heavy metal, NASCAR, and the mullet. You'd think we could at least hold our own with a nation whose greatest national accomplishment was a fully lit highway transit system (and that was only built as reparations from Germany!)
