Hmmm. Not especially atypical. I've seen many devout religious buckle under pressure, stress or chemical influence and expose their inner humanity.
I believe if you are a bigot you are a bigot, period. It's not like he BECAME one because he was buzzed. Stress or alcohol/drugs only makes it easier to release what is already there.
I really don't care about Gibson or anyone else in this regard. I just notice that society seems to hold people who push their religion to a somewhat higher standard than everyone else (Do people think the Pope is a regular guy?) and they seem to enjoy having people feel that way. He's an actor. I couldn't care less about him personally.

Yeah, he must feel that way to have said those things. Unless he was just really pissed. I've said things I didn't mean at all just to hurt the other person (not that I'm proud of that, but it's happened).

Gibson never apologised for his anti gay remarks twenty years ago..........see we have memory like an elephant, and we hold a grudge like no one else. Gibson came off like an Opus Dei freakazoid after Passion of the Christ, he ONLY attends Mass in LATIN.

did anybody see the "The passion of the Jew" a Southpark episode? It shows Mel Gibson doing everything that article wrote about him.

Hey, give the poor fucker a break fercrissakes. He's Australian after all, and as Paul Theroux noted, you'd be hard pressed to find a more all-consuming will to inebriation on the entire planet (short of Finns in winter) than with Australians.

So due account must be taken for his, uh, cultural handicap. :)

NPR just covered this, with a little back story. Apparently Gibson's father was a virilent Holocaust denier. When asked back in '04 if he subscribed to his father's views, Gibson denied being anti-semitic, but left it with a cryptic, "My father has never lied to me." Also, in his Passion of the Christ, he removed the 'blood curse' against the Jews as murderers of Christ... as least the english subtitle... leaving the aramaic dialogue in.

For all the, "aw, he was just an actor being drunk, what's the big deal", I find the whole thing a bit disturbing. Would anyone here be chuckling if he'd gone on about the damn 'niggers'?

    I have two words:

    So what?

Good God, my ex boyfriend's dad said more volitile stuff than that and you don't see him in the news. Yeah, I know, Mel's a celebrity. But who's he hurting? I find him an idiot, but he's allowed to say what he wants. If he hates gay, he can say it. And the gay community can bash him for doing so. Same for the Jews, and the Pagans.

If he went on about the damn n*****s, I'd still be chuckling because its not my place to be offended for someone. Personally, I dislike the word but he's not talking about me. I would hope the African American ranks would rise up in horror and disgust. But until he makes disparaging comments about women, I'll sit back, laugh and say, "Silly old Mel."

Were you as harsh when Bush-hater Alec Baldwin was "outed" for beating his wife, Kim Basinger? Or when the 70s icon Jackson Browne was tagged for beating his wife, Darryl Hannah? I doubt it.

Gibson was drunk and said some things he shouldn't have said. There is ZERO evidence that Gibson has ever ACTED inappropriately toward gays or Jews. It's not enough not to discriminate. One's mind must be pure of any heretical thought as well.

The thought police are a danger to America. They must be stopped.

I have it on good authority Gibson believes slapping a woman now and then is a good thing.

Oh, wait. Sorry, that was Sean Connery.
