    Superman Is Not Gay!!!

Superman Returns director Bryan Singer has played down newspaper, magazine and internet speculation that his version of the superhero is gay.

Superman "is probably the most heterosexual character in any movie I've ever made," said Singer.

The issue has been debated in gay magazine The Advocate, the Los Angeles Times and on entertainment websites.

Singer's new film stars Brandon Routh, who takes over the role following the death of Christopher Reeve in 2004.

But here's my question: Since the success of Brokeback Mountain, why is it that Singer was so averse to the idea? C'mon. Being gay is IN, right?

Supergirl is a lesbian. And I always wondered about Jimmie Olson.

A great disappointment to the guys here, I'm sure.

But back to my original question: why do you think the director was so anxious to stress that Superman's straight?

Bwecause Bryan singer is openly gay and the last movies he made, X-men I & II are about equality. Origionally, specifically about racism, but in modern setting you can take whatever metaphore you choose and an obvious one is the issue of the oppression of homosexuals.
Society may be formed so as to exist without crime, without poverty, […] no obstacle whatsoever intervenes at this moment except ignorance to prevent such a state of society.

Precisely. So why does he go out of his way to say Superman ain't gay? He should say: "Yeah, he's gay. So what?" or at least: "It doesn't matter, does it?"

Maybe because Superman Returns is getting some ungerground rumblings that it SUCKS and they need everyone they can to come see the movie to make it back.

BTW I love the "oppression" of homosexuals.... That line craks me up.

Yeah, that's why it doesn't hurt to say Superman's gay!

    He's not...

And if people hear "The new superman sucks" before it comes out, then hear "HE's gay" I don't want to see the man of steel taking it... with steel you know?

Not too many people do. Some wouldn't care, some would freak and protest, some would see it.. but really, business is business, and watching a "gay Superman"...

Not $$ savvy especially with this flicks price tag of 300 million.

I can't wait for the day when sexual orientation is not a consideration in anything. It "ani't" no ones business which way people go. Those who attempt to inject it in any issue, usually have some agenda by exploiting sexual orientation. Otherwise, why would it matter? Do you really care what goes on inside someone's bedroom? I don't, and really don't care to know, as long as no one is injured in the physical activity.

My question is, why are you making such a big fuss over this?

Big fuss? What big fuss? This is just a general discussion.

Why did you think it was a big fuss?

Reasons why Superman cannot be gay:

    1) Superman comics are still sold to 5 year old kids who can barely read. Sexual orientation isn't really an issue that should come up with these kids.

    2) The story. Saying Superman is gay is like saying "Superman's costume is purple." It's fine if you want to take Superman and give him a purple outfit, but that's not really the traditional Superman. Now you're changing the story. Superman is the closest thing Americans have to a mythology; to a lot of people it's every bit as sacred.

    3) Louise Lane. Going with point 2, Louise Lane is part of the Superman story. If he's gay, you're changing that part of the story... at which point you may as well start giving him powers he's never had before like telepathy or shapeshifting.

    So yeah. Superman: not gay.

Lois Lane married Clark Kent (Superman). But so what? Rock Hudson was married too, wasn't he?

I'm all for doing spin-off stories of Superman. "What if Superman wore all black?" "What if Superman was a villain?" "What if Clark Kent worked as a garbage man instead of a reporter?" "What if Superman had no vulnerability to kryptonite?"

There can be some compelling stories to be told in those scenarios, but they're not the MAIN story. They aren't the ORIGINAL story.

Having Superman be gay changes the original story. I'm all for spin-offs, but you can't call a spin-off the original story.

And it's been made very clear that this movie is the original story.

The Lois Lane point...Superman is clearly gay, he picks Lois Lane over Kristen Kreuk. I mean Lana Lang.

I don't think he has a preference. He's a neuter. He knows if he had sex with any human being, gay or straight, he'd kill them when he reached climax. The concept of having sex but never being able to climax is the ultimate bummer. Beating off, he can aim emissions into space and avoid injuring anyone.

I shock myself to say it, but I agree with Z on this one. You can't change the story to make a political point. If you do, it's not really Superman any more.

It's done all the time. I mean since when was The Kingpin ("Daredevil") black?
