Cardinal backs limited condom use

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4929962.stm

One of the Roman Catholic Church's most distinguished cardinals has publicly backed the use of condoms among married couples to prevent Aids transmission.
Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini said that in couples where one had HIV/Aids, which could pass to the partner, the use of condoms was "a lesser evil".

too bad the current pope is completely inflexible when it comes to condoms (and anything else)..

the idea that people should only have sex to reproduce is total bullshit, and the church's stance is not supported in the bible. if god created our bodies, as the church argues, then why in the hell were our bodies made in such a way that having sex feels so good? personally, the church's ridiculous stance towards sex is unhuman - to embrace sexuality is to embrace your humanity to some degree.

More proof of how they attempt to change society through dogma, and projected guilt.

Here's a thought.... if you don't like the Catholics' views, then don't be Catholic. Damn I'm insightful!! That's what that heretical bishop should've done.

Putting a postive spin on things (which is about all I can do, being surrounded by fervent Catholics both privately and professionally -- well that's my take :) ), this demonstrates once again that the Church isn't an absolute monolith. Good thing, eh?

sure it is.... if this Cardinal feels that limited condom use is acceptable, then he is a heretic, and he is ipso facto removed from his position in the Church. Even though Ratzinger and the other apostates that are at high levels of the Church, his heretical claims removes him from the Church... So its not the Church that has fallen, its simply that man.

To the Catholic church, admitting they're dead wrong on any subject is like stripping naked in public.

In religion, compassion and common sense always take a back seat to doctrine. Keeping the faithful in line is the paramount concern. Their health and happiness is only important if they conform to doctrine.

Actually, there are no sins in the Catholic church that can't be forgiven with a few bucks in the tray. My father's side of the family were all Catholics and not a single sign of ethics could be found in any of them. They had it made, as they never missed a Mass.

i was raised catholic, but i'm not an actively practicing catholic.. i don't need any special religious club to tell me what to do in order to have my own relationship with god. the church has far more sin on its hands than i can ever achieve myself. the church is tainted goods.

Would appear its a popular choice amongst the priests in the UK

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...30/ixhome.html

Quote:
Two-thirds of Roman Catholic priests in England and Wales believe that the use of condoms could be acceptable.

In a survey of clergy conducted by The Sunday Telegraph, 65 per cent of those questioned said that they thought it morally defensible to use condoms in order to curb the spread of HIV.
I wonder if they practice what they preach

Vatican's rethink on ban signals historic move to cut the spread of Aids
http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article361564.ece

Quote:
The Catholic Church is on the brink of a historic change of approach over condoms which could bring hope to millions in Africa and other parts of the developing world devastated by Aids.
"We are conducting a very profound scientific, technical and moral study," said the head of the Vatican Council for Health Pastoral Care. The church is expected to give a guarded, provisional blessing to the use of condoms by married couples when one of them suffers from Aids, as a way of protecting the health of the other partner.
god what next women priests?
