One fourth of nation's schools fail 'no child' standards

http://www.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/03....ap/index.html

Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than a fourth of the nation's schools failed to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Law last year, according to preliminary numbers reported to the Department of Education.

About half the states increased the number of schools making "adequate yearly progress" in improving student test scores in math and reading in the 2004-05 school year. Overall, 27 percent of the schools failed to show adequate improvement, up one percentage point from the year before.

"This is just one piece of data we look at," said Chad Colby, a spokesman for the Department of Education. These numbers alone don't signify a trend in how schools are doing, he said Wednesday. "This isn't a trend indicator in proficiency."

Schools receiving federal poverty aid can be sanctioned for not making "adequate yearly progress" two years in a row, with administrators and teachers eventually being replaced.

To meet goals, schools must show overall improvement, plus gains by minority students, poor students, students with limited English skills and students with disabilities.

So it goes

We need to get a national voucher system going. The sooner the better.

Let's get some market competition going amongst these failing schools!

We're not just going to sit back and keep giving them money for failing!

Optimism all the way.
I would rather say 3/4 would be more accurate.

We just create half-illiterals.
Except for Colleges, Universities, ect., the level of education in U.S. is a joke.
The best part is : test. This is a mockery. Anybody can mark the right box.
No tests. Let students write, instead. This approach brings the real results on knowledge in a particular subject, faculty, ect.

Who is to be blamed :
- system (itself)
- parents and/or guardians

"No Child Left Behind" is the worst solution for the U.S. education.

P.S.
I bet American students would never pass a primary school in China, for example, not to mention a high-school that is behind the reach, completely.

Not only writing papers, but making oral presentations are two very good options instead of tests.

Tests basically teach students how to cram a bunch of stuff in their minds for a couple days and then forget it.

I agree on that as the must-solution, as well.

The system is failing because the system was designed to fail.

Forced socialist programs in a capitalist society creates failure by design.

It only gets worse every year. I am becomming increasingly pessimistic about the survival of this country. Every major institution is failing the citizens. It can only lead to the eventual entire failure of the US.

Maybe this is what needs to happen here. Maybe this is what is happening here now.

Maybe it can be rebuilt from the ashes. And maybe, then again, it can't.

Ahhhhhh some days are better than others.

An additional and important issue :
- social studies

So-called "SocialStudies" - yet another mockery - should have been replaced with the separate subjects and/or faculties :
- anatomy
- biology
- chemistry
- geography
- history
- physics
- zoology
