BellSouth Deal Gives AT&T Lead in 'Ma Bell' Stature

AT&T Inc.'s $67 billion agreement to buy BellSouth Corp. will cement a position as the largest U.S. provider of telephone services and hand it full ownership of Cingular Wireless LLC, the nation's biggest mobile-phone company.

AT&T Inc. , which has agreed to buy BellSouth Corp. for $67 billion in stock, Monday said it expects to cut some 10,000 jobs between 2007 and 2009, once the acquisition has closed.

I had to head off the socialists at the pass before they could fire up their properganda machines.

You can almost here the cries of "Monopoly!" from the streets.

Utter nonsense.


The next move will see Verizon buying out Vodaphones stake in Verizon Wireless.


This will leave three main players in the telecommunications industry:

- at&t (Southwestern Bell, Ameritech, Pacific Telesis, and the original AT&T)
- Verizon (NYNEX, Bell Atlantic, GTE, and MCI)
- Qwest (USWest)

Far from a monopoly.

The government should not and does not have any right to screw with these plans.
