Pinochet daughter 'seeks asylum'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4649114.stm

Quote:
Lucia Pinochet, the eldest daughter of Chile's former military ruler, has reportedly requested asylum in the US.
She was detained at a US airport on an international arrest warrant after fleeing charges of tax evasion and using a false passport in Chile.

Chile's Interior Minister, Francisco Vidal, said he believed her claim would be rejected because "asylum was for cases where there was no state of law".

US officials would not comment on whether Ms Pinochet was seeking asylum.

She was taken into custody on Wednesday after being denied entry at Washington Dulles airport because of the warrant for her arrest.
Well. Will she be deported back to Chile?

Good question. Is this somehow part of whatever elaborate deal was worked out between Jack Straw, Pinochet and God-only-knows-whom to declare the old bugger too ill to stand trial in Britain? That too is a good question.

The Chilean Air Force mission there contacted Robert Roane, who headed Riggs's London office, asking if the bank's corporate jet could fly nonstop from London to Chile.
Yeah, they sure as hell didn't want to be refueling in Madrid, say. :)

It's such a shame we don't have upright men like Pinochet running things in The Backyard these days. Instead we have these short, dark troublemakers like Chavez and Morales "destabilizing" the region. Ugh!

Seconded. I was close friends with a refugee from the Pinochet regime in the early 70's. I think it was around the summer of 1973. His father had sent him up to the US to "go to school", after he was herded into a "futbol" stadium but later released by "mistake" when a draft notice arrived at his home. He saw some vicious things in that "stadium" that he had recounted to me over long conversations between beers and bongs during the summer of 73. I'll never forget the frightened look in his eyes as he related his stories into the early hours of the mornings. His concern for his friends and relatives at home. His hatred for a dictator that turned his homeland into a a living hell. I could only imagine the terror of the "middle of the night" arrests and the torture in the political prisons. A sad chapter in the history of Chile for sure.

Now, Pinochet's daughter has the balls of a gorilla to come here and expect the US to protect her from her fellow countrymen who deserve answers to the questions they are entitled to today. She was in her 30's when her father was in power and can surely provide answers about hidden wealth to the tune of 27 million dollars and other questions of state that the Chilean people deserve from that nighmare of human rights abuses. She should be deported as soon as possible.

brien - I think I have to agree with you on that statement!

We do not need to harbor politically connected criminals from their own judicial system.

Valech Report

This report was published on November 29, 2004 and detailed abuses committed in Chile between 1973 and 1990 by agents of Augusto Pinochet's military regime. The weird thing was, I found this while reading about Superman (Christopher Reeve). I don't know why Reeve and other actors were supporting his dictatorship, he doesn't sound like a good guy to be associated with.
