Celebrating Bachelet looks ahead

(...) One issue notable by its absence during the campaign was the shadow still cast over Chile by the former military leader, Augusto Pinochet.

He has been watching proceedings from his home outside the capital while he is being investigated for financial irregularities.

Some have accused the Chilean government of not dealing with those who committed human rights during the 17 years of military rule toughly enough.

But the most moving moment on an emotional night came when Dr Bachelet talked of her father, Alberto, who she said would have been the most proud of her victory.

The air force commander died after being tortured in the custody of General Pinochet's military government in the early 1970s. (...)
Yet another South American nation turns its back on the market-fundamentalist commandments of The Neighbour to the North and the jackbooted jackals used to implement them. Yep, lotsa weeds a-growin in the backyard these days.

But don't worry. The US is building a big military base in Paraguay, not far from them lil ol gas fields in Bolivia. And soon we'll be hearing about how these newly elected leftist governments are "destabilizing the region". So watch out.

Lets hope you are wrong. I'm not suggesting that you are, but ...

As a matter of fact, I'm betting your call is right on target. That sounds exactly like the way my government operates on daily basis, right down to the motivation to act like fascists, and the reason to bring out the Global Police Force.

And not too far away:

Evo Morales has been sworn in as Bolivia's first indigenous president, pledging to end "500 years" of injustice against his people. (...)

(Morales) said he would end the plundering of the nation's natural recourses, but stressed there would be no revenge.

Thousands of Bolivians and many foreign dignitaries witnessed the colourful ceremony at the Congress in La Paz.

"I wish to tell you, my Indian brothers, that the 500-year indigenous and popular campaign of resistance has not been in vain," Mr Morales, an Aymara Indian, said during an emotional speech. (...)

He acknowledged the magnitude of the task during his five-year term, as Bolivia still remains South America's poorest country, correspondents say.

Mr Morales is a fierce critic of the US and sees his election as a triumph for indigenous peoples.
Godspeed, Evo. The Bastards are laying for ya.

You think maybe the US is too busy with the Mideast to go to war in South America?

Perhaps, but when we pull out we can go spread our "democratic ideals" in South America.

I mean it's all America right, should be a reasonable arguement for Congress to authorize a war on South America, saying "America means democracy damnit! They must have our ideals."

That would be a riot

You or I might think it's too busy, but does Rummy realize this? If you read the second link in my first post, one could be forgiven for thinking he's hot to trot (as usual).
