US mosques checked for radiation

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4557224.stm

Quote:
US authorities have been secretly monitoring radiation levels at Muslim sites amid fears that terrorists might obtain nuclear weapons, it has emerged.
Scores of mosques and private addresses have been checked for radiation, the US News and World Report says.

A Justice Department spokesman said the programme was necessary in the fight against al-Qaeda.

Last week, President George W Bush admitted allowing the wiretapping of Americans with suspected terror links.

Mr Bush has defended the covert programme and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.
This is paranoia beyond belief....and yet another dubious 'security' measure on dodgy legal grounds...

You know, scanning the earth for radiation is not a bad idea. It's a little weird that it's just Muslim neighborhoods. I feel like this is actually a good plan. Somebody give them permission to do this and punish them for everything dumb they've come up with to "keep America safe".

I can certainly see the logic behind a move like this. This probably stems from the botched scenario where they were trying to monitor ships on the open sea, and scan them for radiation, but they only ever turned up ships transporting marble. (marble emits a very low level of radiation naturally)

While I do not condone the secrecy aspect of the endeavour, I certainly undestand the motivation, and the philosophy behind such a tactic.

Can you imagine the horror, if these radiation checks lead to American service men and women who come home from Iraq with DU radiation only to join up with the enemy religion?
Which is worse?

I am not a hater. I believe in the freedom of religion. I am against all pre-emptive war. Especially crusades.

Perhaps it was crude to point out the irony of a rhetorical worse case scenario.

I protest our troops being hijaced to fight a war of profit, religion or political strategy.

No, this is reality to which we need to wake up to. Muslims across the world have used their mosques to shield them from harm as they do their dirty work. Bombing in and out of the Mosques of innocent people. Why should they be immune here? If you can't stand the heat get off the griddle.

Yes Abdullah, why do Muslims and others hate so much as to kill so brutally with wood choppers and beheadings. Did Saddam represent any section of the Muslim community?

The Mosque is a place of worship and thats all, how would you like it if people started infiltrating Churches looking for dangerous weapons there?

Bush claims to be fighting a war with terrorism, why not fight with the Christian Identity? The KKK? The Order? Lord's Resistance Army? Nagaland Rebels ? God's Army? Peru's Shining Path?

Seems more like a war against Islam now that there checking Mosques for radiation.

If I recall correctly, he was a secular ruler who suppressed religion throughout his rule.
So your point is?

Yes but it stops most people from worrying about bush´s order to spy on Americans ¨in the interests of national security¨

I wonder if he might suspend the 2008 elections if he felt it was in the interests of national security?

The mosque may be a place of worship - for some. For others, it is simply another venue where extremist behaviour can be carried out.

Fact remains that in the past, mosques have been used to hide all sorts of contraptions, and to think that simply because it is a mosque, similar villations will not occur in the future is simply naive.

As for respect, in war there is little room left for respect.

Back to the topic at hand though, if the mosques are public, i see no problem with these searches. It is the violation of the private mosques that make me uneasy. But then again, i expect that it is the private buildings who harbor the greatest need to be searched - if at all.

Zealot serves the purpose to keeping us aware of the harm of ignorance mixed with religious conviction, equally prejudice and the violence that all religions attempt to prevent. Ignorance and self centered egotism are the real enemy. Liberal education, the arts and humanities, is the solution.

I should apologize for this naughty thought, but a new US servalence tool may be the device that measures radiation. "Hey, Mac, we are getting a strong radiation signal from that building. Must be people from Iraq gathering there. Let's check it out."

I can appreciate keeping on our toes regarding nuclear weapons, but espeically with this news report, it is so obvious if one wants to hide, the best place to hide is in the middle of the sheep, not the den of the fox.

Can we observe radiation from satellites? Is Islam considered the threat?

Hate Abdullah, is something all of us sinners have inherited from our old man Adam.
I have to fight daily to guard my tongue, my mind and have to pray daily for forgiveness.
That is why Abdullah and I am sorry you interpret my words as hate: that is not my desire. My Bible says: "Seek ye the truth and it will set you free". If truth is not in my words I would appreciate your correction, thank you.
