Venezuela gives Exxon ultimatum

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4544390.stm

Quote:
Venezuela has given the world's biggest oil company, ExxonMobil, until the end of this year to enter a joint venture with the state.

Failure to do so will almost certainly result in Exxon losing its oil field concessions in the country.

Venezuela's socialist government has now signed new agreements with almost all foreign petroleum companies.

After months of pressure from left- wing leader Hugo Chavez most foreign oil firms working there have caved in.

They have agreed to hand over a controlling stake of their oil interests to the Venezuelan state.

This means that Venezuela, which has the world's largest petroleum reserves, now calls the shots in what the foreign guests can and cannot do.
Sounds interesting....and probly what S.America needs to get back on its feet.

I agree with what they are doing, even though I despise socialism. Their country, their rules.

I agree, but the American oil junta that put bush in business, the real Emperor, is not gonna like it.

I'm no fan of socialism, but I sure do have a soft spot for Hugo. The man has stones.

I know I bear the pacifist label affixed to me by the NeoCons, but in person, I'm anything but a pacifist, or a "peace clown", and this guys actions speak volumes about his character in my opinion. I think I'd like to have a few beers with old Hugo some time.

There is no need to eliminate the Venezuelian President H. Chavez.
South American leaders seek for unity, that give them a political power in order to become a respected voice around the world. That is a very ambitious political and administartive enterprise.
That would take some decades, though.
There are some goods, merchandise, technology, ect. in U.S. possession that South America is looking for. U.S. needs to develope good relations and/or partnership with those guys, in order to get what we want, and trade to South America something in return. It is important to maintain stable relatiionship with those states, especially since China would bypass yet another level for its oil-related demands and/or needs, soon.

I do not think U.S. considers any activity against H. Chavez.
It would harm to U.S. policy.
Whether "Exxon" complies with the Venezuelian governing body's demands or not, that "Exxon"s choice. It would not stop Venezuelian cargo (read : oil) to be shipped to U.S.

I don't know, although Chavez's popularity will continue to surge with this, Venezuela may regret this in the long run. Look what a mess Mexico is in with Pemex, all so Cardenas could ride the popularity wave for a few years. Same thing with Argentina after Juan Peron nationalized everything.

Chavez might not be very popular with many, but like Milton Bradley, I got to hand it to him...he has really strong convictions/beliefs. First offering discount gas for some of the poorer residents of the US, and now this...Chavez has shown that he's prepared to be a strong leader and go by his own agenda.
