Report: Bush eased domestic spy rules after 9/11

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/12/16/bu....ap/index.html

President Bush authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States -- without getting search warrants -- following the Sept. 11 attacks, The New York Times reports.

The presidential order, which Bush signed in 2002, has allowed the agency to monitor the international phone calls and international e-mails of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of people inside the United States, according to a story posted Thursday on the Times' Web site.

Before the new program began, the NSA typically limited its domestic surveillance to foreign embassies and missions and obtained court orders to do so. Under the post-Sept. 11 program, the NSA has eavesdropped, without warrants, on as many 500 people inside the United States at any given time. Overseas, 5,000 to 7,000 people suspected of terrorist ties are monitored at one time.

I'm sure WH lawyers have decided that this is not an actionable offense so it will go the way of all the other legal challenges to Bush, nowhere.

They had that story on the news when I woke up this morning - the funny thing is that the next news story (channel 7 early morning news - west coast) was about this guy who installed a security camera because some man was looking in the window at his teenage daughter - sure enough he got the guy on film sneaking up to the window at night.

The reporter remarked "oh, that is creepy".

The odd things is that the reporter did not think it was creepy for the government to ease drop on people - what is the difference?

I have nothing to hide if they want to listen to my phone calls. If a person is suspected with doing evil to their fellow man let them listen. They can’t listen to every single person’s phone call in the states. But, if you are my neighbor and want to run drugs or support terrorism they can listen to both our phones. It is people like you that would stab America in the back that they need to listen to.

Bush is doing evil to us right now.

He is spying against the law, (a crime I'll have you know) taking our money to fight foreign wars that do not concern us, and letting corporate America run workers, and now retirees into the poor house

Why is it when the crime is Blue Collar, the Republicans want blood, or death, but when the crime is White Collar, (and one of your boys could be implicated) you have the tendency to want to rush to their aid, and explain away their bad behavior?

against the law?!? what does that matter? bush is above the law, didn't you know that.. he's closer to god than the pope for christity christ's sake.

no doubt there will denials and waffling with this.. i think we're all used to bush's above the law antics by now that this isn't all that surprising. like i said, the only good that can come out of this is to see the patriot act fail in the senate.

hope for america...

That’s all you and the other liberals have, to point to the war. He is taking all your money to fight the war? I am sure you supplied the money for the military operations all by your lonesome. If you are talking for America than you are also wrong. Americans voted for congressman and the President. Both of these parties gave authorization to invade Iraq. Please don’t bring up that the President single-handedly manipulated documents, that’s just not true. You like all the liberals that are just mad that this man is not going to run away from what “We” started.

Now back to the eavesdropping…do you have something you are hiding?

unless you're a pro-gestapo fascist, do you have a problem with bush breaking federal laws so that he can spy on american citizens?

seems like you might not believe in that "america: the land of the free" motto...

NYT 'SPYING' SPLASH TIED TO BOOK RELEASE
Fri Dec 16 200 11:27:16 ET

**Exclusive**

Newspaper fails to inform readers "news break" is tied to book publication

On the front page of today's NEW YORK TIMES, national security reporter James Risen claims that "months after the September 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States... without the court approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials."

Risen claims the White House asked the paper not to publish the article, saying that it could jeopardize continuing investigations and alert would-be terrorists that they might be under scrutiny.

Risen claims the TIMES delayed publication of the article for a year to conduct additional reporting.

But now comes word James Risen's article is only one of many "explosive newsbreaking" stories that can be found -- in his upcoming book!

The paper failed to reveal the urgent story was tied to a book release and sale.

"STATE OF WAR: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration" is to be published by FREE PRESS in the coming weeks, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

Carisa Hays, VP, Director of Publicity FREE PRESS, confirms the book is being published.

The book editor of Bush critic Richard Clarke [AGAINST ALL ENEMIES] signed Risen to FREE PRESS.
This may be the reason why 'some' news outlets backed off the story. Sorry but 'NEWS releases' to sell books seems self serving and not news.

Media spin, wasn't the NYT also the Pham Wars originator? Oh, by the way - didn't she come out and admit she was worng?

You got that right jb. There is nothing Bush can do that will please his haters. We must be nice to the radicals who attack. Don't torture or harrass! Get the point, they want the attackers to succeed so they can blame Bush.

Yawn... Yawn... Yawn...

Yet another attempt by the New York Times to damage the Bush presidency and our country's ability to defend itself from the true enemy - terrorists who want us all dead. The bottom line is that this news organization has, since just after 9-1-1, done all it can to undermine the war on terror.

I am so tired of our press supporting the enemy. They continually spout untruths that, when challenged, are countered with personal attacks of those asking the questions. Additionally, the lies are parroted enmasse through the syndication of said stories or polls in papers throughout the country and the world. Typical leftist tactic: Repeat it until it is accepted as truth.

I also find the timing of this story (with the supposed book promotion accusation aside) to be suspect. It seems that any good news coming out of Iraq (i.e. yesterday's successful election) must be countered with something to keep the President's poll numbers down. Not to mention that the very wording of the NYT polls is clearly designed to allow the extraction of results DESIRED - not OBTAINED - through the polling process.

I am just glad we have a leader who sticks by his convictions and does not lick his finger and stick it in the wind each morning to determine where he stands on the issues that day. I know that is hard for some to deal with, as when they see it, they must naturally reflect on their own morals and values. That can be a scary thing for many.

Sauce

P.S. - Tap my phone. Read my mail. I volunteer these right to an ELECTED government any day. Stupid? Maybe. Nothing to hide? Definitely!

Oh... and Merry Christmas.

And they need to treat all true Americans like suspects until...........
When? The war on/of terror has only increased the number of terrorists. We have, by aggressively striking oil rich Mid East nations, only aided the al Qaida recruiters. There are more "terrorists" now than ever. They just dont have to travel as far to kill us now.
Dont think its all about numbers either, they know this current quagmire works to their advantage, (see Viet Nam). Quagmire Accomplished!

You think terror is good, dont you? You believe as long as Americans are afraid, they will need to look up to the gubmint to protect them and there wont be any need for dissent.
Well, that sounds an awful lot like another policy recently:

"Terrorism is the best political weapon for nothing drives people harder than a fear of sudden death."
-- Adolf Hitler

WTC 7 Controlled Demolition

Bush does plenty to damage his own self.
...... Dont go blaming the NYT for simply reporting it.

isn't that what bush and friends did when they stated as fact that saddam was developing wmd's and that we knew where the stockpiles were?

i wonder if you'll so readily give up your rights if someone like hillary clinton ends up being president... wouldn't want to be a hypocrite though..

You are confirming for me that there is a comprehension problem at that end of this conversation.

Now, say it with me, Milton is not a Liberal, or a Democrat. OK? I know your need to reduce everything to fit the parameters of your little regurgitated sound bytes, and talking points, but in the real world, two is not always the lowest common denominator.

[waving hand in the air]

Over here, you know, us third party supporters whos opinions have been so marginalized that we are not even on most peoples radar screens anymore, Im one of them.

Alright then, if you can manage to prove that you can get that one fact straight, perhaps there would be a reason to continue this conversation, otherwise, I'm pretty sure I'm just talking to a list of O'Rielly's talking point memo's.

Fear is the most debilitating of all human emotions. A fearful person will do anything, say anything, accept anything, reject anything, if it makes him feel more secure for his own, his family's or his country's security and safety, whether it actually accomplishes it or not.

It works like a charm. A fearful people are the easiest to govern. Their freedom and liberty can be taken away, and they can be convinced to believe that it was done for their own good - to give them security. They can be convinced to give up their liberty - voluntarily.

<snip>

The USA Patriots Act is an acronym for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism."

The way that government is going to be provided with these "appropriate tools" is to "temporarily" suspend or eliminate as much of our Constitution and its Bill of Rights as it can, without court oversight or intervention, so that we will not be at a disadvantage in the war against terrorism. That's the idea.

Think about that for a minute, and then ask yourself: Why in the world would we voluntarily do to ourselves that which our enemies over the last 200-plus years have not been able to do to us by force? Why would we be so willing to give up our God-given rights that have been verbalized in our Constitution, when we have fought so hard to preserve them?

If our enemies hate our freedoms, they have won when we give up those freedoms. And Rights. A people under a dictator dont have any rights. Your president recently (alledgedly) refferred to the Constitution as "just a goddamn piece of paper". Sounds like he was sincere when he declared (Factually):
"If this were a dictatorship, it's be a heckuva lot easier. Just so long as I'm the dictator"

On this board, it worked like a charm
