For all we know the ayatollahs seek to ultimately incinerate the Jews.
Right. And for all we know Putin is even now pressing the button to launch ICBMs against Peoria, so better vaporize him first, eh rum?

You haven't been paying attention. Iran's on-again off-again string-pulling with its surrogates in Lebanon shows that it's keenly aware of the broader picture and its own vulnerabilities. The ayatollahs may be a gang of bearded, hide-bound old freaks, but they aren't that crazy. And just in case they were, it could be made crystal-clear to them (as it was to Saddam in '91) that one misstep and they're toast.

Yes, that's my perspective.

We know there are lots of terrorists in Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon and the vicinity who actively plan the destruction of Israel, worse, they put their plans into action -but they've never been nuked.
C'mon now, rum. They couldn't destroy Andorra, much less Israel, whatever their fantasies. But it's known that the Israelis were close to firing nukes in the 1973 Yom Kippur war, when it looked like they might actually be overrun. So let's amend that to: nobody seriously planning to destroy Israel has ever had anything to worry about.

Seems you mean only those capable of seriously threatening Israel are kept from some further step in furtherance of its erradication by fear of a nuclear attack, this is not so bad. I don't know of the dissuasory impact of nukes.

By "an acknowledged capability to incinerate Jerusalem or Tel Aviv" I mean acknowledged by the Iranian government, their president and his cabinet figures there. These have indicated previously that they have a nuclear program, reactors and are conducting tests to enrich nuclear materials to weapons grade (though it is insisted this is for exclusively peaceful applications). Do you think they are doing this purely for research? The Iranian government, by indicating they have a nuclear enrichment plant capable of producing material suitable for a nuclear bomb and recurringly threatening to initiate weapons grade enrichment procedures have acknowledged the capability of producing these. The armed forces of Iran include in their arsenals a variety of scuds and have sought to improve their range and reliability. These missiles do have the capacity to reach both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Scuds can be modified for a nuclear payload. Finally, add the statement from Iran's president indicating a desire to wipe off or erase Israel from the map. Taken together, how far-fetched is it to say Iran has the acknowledged capability and even the intent to incinerate Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?
