People believed in Jimmy Swaggart after he was nabbed with a hooker TWICE.
The true believers refer to that as "ministering to the fallen."

George Bush has claimed he was on a mission from God when he launched the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, according to a senior Palestinian politician in an interview to be broadcast by the BBC later this month.

Mr Bush revealed the extent of his religious fervour when he met a Palestinian delegation during the Israeli-Palestinian summit at the Egpytian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, four months after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

One of the delegates, Nabil Shaath, who was Palestinian foreign minister at the time, said: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."
If you are a politican, you must take into calcullations that some of those you deal with may release a specific information to the public, later.

Bush is a player.
He had known very well what a role plays a religious aspect in some communities, and he used that factor on a purpose. That is nothing new, but an old trick. (A similar trick played T. Blair in talks with Putin).
Now, he knows what information should or should not be released to some people. It worked :-)))

I'm not so sure Bush is a player so much as he is a pawn. This has nothing to do with politics, I just think the guy isn't all that sharp. Even when listeining to his supporters, they usually make their points about him by declaring what he MEANS and not what he actually says.

Hey you guys may think George is silly, insane even. But I think this wasn't even his idea. It was a deliberate stunt dreamed up by his aides/speech writers to stir up the emotions (and support) of the nation's powerful Christian right.

Oh, incidentally, watch this clip:
