Anger as Bali bomb jail terms cut

Relatives of UK victims of the Bali bombings in 2002 have reacted angrily after 18 people jailed over the attacks had their sentences cut. Indonesia has reduced prison terms as part of a tradition of remissions for the country's Independence Day. Susanna Miller, whose brother Dan, from Kent, was among those who died in the attacks said the news was "appalling". Twenty-eight Britons were among 202 people who died when two bombs exploded in the Kuta area on 12 October 2002. One bomb hit an Irish bar on the tourist strip and the other exploded in a van outside a nearby club. Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, a 66-year-old cleric who was convicted of conspiracy in the attacks and jailed for 30 months, was told on Wednesday his sentence would be reduced by four months and 15 days. Seventeen other people have had their jail terms cut by three months. Ringleaders of the attacks, who were jailed for life or sentenced to death, are not eligible for remission. The UK Bali Bombing Victims group, which represents most of the British families, has said it is seeking an urgent meeting with the Indonesian Ambassador in London.

Right seeing as Indonesia is not going to take the murder of innocents seriously, then it should no longer recieve any sort of finacial or economic aid from anyone of the 21 other countries where people who died hailed from. This is disgusting, giving clemency to people who during their trials showed no remorse with a few even calling for further attacks on Non-muslims and those muslims who "colaborate" with the the "infidels". :rolleyes:

Bali conspirators' jail terms cut

Indonesia has reduced the 30-month sentence handed down to controversial cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir for his role in the Bali bombings. Ba'asyir, who was found guilty in March of conspiracy in the 2002 attack that killed 202 people, had his jail term cut by four months and 15 days. Seventeen others convicted of playing a role in the bombings had their sentences cut by three months. There is a tradition of remissions for Indonesia's Independence Day. Ba'asyir has denied the charges against him, but his appeal has been rejected. Ba'asyir "received a remission of four months and 15 days," Dedi Sutardi, chief warden at Cipinang Prison in Jakarta, announced. This means the 66-year-old cleric could be released from prison by May 2007.

He is widely known to be the spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiah, and has in the past called for 'Jihad' against the Non-Muslim world and moderate muslims. He is scum of the highest order, and he's an insult to Islam and the teachings of the Qu'ran

It could be all a matter of priorities Trotsky. Consider William Calley who was responsible for the murders of innocent civilian women and children at My Lai. Nixon pardoned him and he ended up serving something like a month behind bars, maybe even less.

This should tell us two things:

1.No country should trade with the U.S. because they don't take the murder of innocent civilians seriously.

2. It's only murder and we should let bygones be bygones for Indonesians as well as for Americans.

disclaimer: I wouldn't personally subscribe to #2 above but it doesn't hurt to reflect reality once in a while so we don't get too sidetracked with our self-righteousness. My personal preference would be to jail the works of the fu--ers for life.
