S Korea & US split over North

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asi...ic/4141480.stm

Quote:
South Korea's unification minister has reportedly disagreed with the US on how to end North Korea's nuclear threat.
Chung Dong-young told a South Korean internet site that Pyongyang should be allowed a peaceful nuclear programme.

The US maintains North Korea must end all its nuclear activities, whether for making weapons or producing energy, to receive aid and diplomatic concessions.

The fact that the two allies appear to disagree so fundamentally does not bode well for on-going talks on the issue.
Well. That's another round of talks passed off as useless, then. Who should change their position?

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

Seoul,defying U.S., backs North on use of nuclear power {Press}
International Herald Tribune ...FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 2005

Seoul, defying U.S., backs North on use of nuclear power [/center]

Worth repeating
Quote:
Tribune SEOUL: South Korea objected Thursday to a vital American stance in deadlocked nuclear disarmament talks on North Korea, saying that the North should be allowed to run a nuclear program so long as it is for peaceful use.

The South Korean view defies Washington's insistence that North Korea end all of its nuclear programs without exception and creates a breach in U.S. efforts to insure that South Korea, Japan, China and Russia stand united behind the United States when six-nation talks on ending the North's nuclear weapons ambitions resume in Beijing in the week of Aug. 29.

In an interview with an Internet portal, Unification Minister Chung Dong Young of South Korea unveiled an initiative intended to break the nuclear deadlock.

He said Washington and its allies should grant North Korea the right to build its own reactors for power generation, while terminating a Western-financed $4.6 billion project to provide the North with two light-water reactors.

Such an initiative met lukewarm reaction from analysts, because it runs counter to the wishes not only of the United States but also of North Korea. Analysts say North Korea will not settle for any deal that does not revive the light-water reactor project.
Will the US have any allies left in the world under the Bush administration. Clearly when former puppets like South Korea have found the backbone to "defy Washington's insistence" then the writing is on the wall. Is it coincidental with Bolton becoming the US lead 'diplomat'. Maybe, but you only have to look to South America see how things have changed in recent times. The totally corrupt Columbia is the only remaining friend there. Now with China's 'protection' and Hugo's encouragement they are equally defiant.

Quote:
In February, North Korea declared that it had built nuclear weapons because of "hostile" U.S. policies, including a plan to invade the North. North Korea, an energy-starved, isolated country, insists that it has the sovereign right to develop peaceful nuclear power, even if it abandons its nuclear weapons in return for a set of diplomatic and economic rewards.

"This is the part where we disagree on with the United States," Chung said. "We believe that if North Korea returns to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and subjects itself to safeguards agreements and inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency, North Korea should have the rights as an NPT member country."

Such a comment matches perfectly with the North Korean demand. But Chung said North Korea should not expect to get two light-water reactors promised under a 1994 agreement with the United States. Washington killed that accord when it accused the North in late 2002 of running a secret uranium-enrichment program.
Could the rest of the World be right and Georgie be wrong!!!

Why does there have to be a North and South Korea in the first place?

How about one country called Korea?

righthand, you said: "Will the US have any allies left in the world under the Bush administration. Clearly when former puppets like South Korea have found the backbone to "defy Washington's insistence" then the writing is on the wall."

S.Korea, N.Korea, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and soon probably a few more S.American and M.E. countries taking the opportunity to demonstrate their defiance of the U.S. while it's up to it's ass in alligators in Iraq. The question is I believe, is the U.S. going to flex some muscle anywhere else in the world while they are bogged down in Iraq for probably the next 10 years? Sort of reminiscent of the cold war in a way, except more like a bunch of Piranhas each taking their little chunk of the cow stuck in the middle of the stream, while the rest of the herd wisely watches from the safety of the shore.

Yeah I know I'm no poet but it's what came to mind first.

Very good. The piranha idea. Would it be more apt if it was a fisherman who uses sticks of TNT to fish? Then you'd ask why he's in the water one day with no TNT? Like, I'd be sympathetic to the stupid cow/US but not the TNT/fisherman/Bush.

Noticed a sign over a shop the other day.

A strange thought strikes me. Ye, well all my thoughts are strange when I'm thinking of georgie. You know all them previously good US expressions like "Bring it On". Have they gone out of fashion well except for the diehards, who wont be going any dying. You bet ye. Now we know georgie's diction is not the best but could he be rightly charged with destroying US english, or at least bring it into disrepute. Anyone got any ideas.

We can only hope but as long as the country is under the complete control of Republicans, nothing bad is going to happen to Bush. I fear they have gotten themselves into a position where a president won't be impeached unless the other side has the power to make it happen. But worse, I feel that if the opposing party does have the power to impeach a president, it will happen. I say that because it seems obvious to me (and probably most outsiders) that Clinton didn't have it coming but the Repubs. had the power to pull it off. Maybe some Americans will comment on that idea.

oops, a little of topic here!

North Koreans Make Historic Visit to South Korea's Parliament
http://www.voanews.com/english/2000-08-16voa100.cfm
By Benjamin Sand ...Seoul ...16 August 2005

Quote:
high-level North Korean delegation has visited South Korea's National Assembly for the first time. The ground-breaking visit came as North and South staged elaborate joint festivities to mark the end of Japanese colonial rule 60 years ago.

Several high-ranking North Korean officials joined the brief meeting with South Korean lawmakers Tuesday. The North Korean delegation included Kim Ki Nam, second in charge of Pyongyang's policy toward the South.

Earlier, Mr. Kim said he believed everyone, in both North and South Korea, hopes to live in a peaceful and unified nation. He said all Koreans should dedicate themselves to improving relations between North and South. read more
Now the earlier Korea together makes sense. It was all in preparation for this dance. Is re-unification possible or likely? They even have a 'Unification Minister' .

North Korea would starve if we didn't send food.
Americans and our government are mostly nice people, we hate to see the N. Korean people starve despite the idiot their leader is.
Their population, like China has very little contact with the outside world and they do not know what is happening. Their dictator tells them they are the only country eating at all and that America and the rest of the world are starving.

Communists are always full of their propoganda.
I guess we'd have to withhold some food for a while before they took notice.

Their leader in North Korea is crazy.

Clinton did not need an army to do good in the world. His difficulties due to a consenting adult may be an embarrassment to Americans. Not to most of the rest of the world. We have no difficulty separating PRIVATE and PUBLIC. If it had not happened in the Oval Office there may not have been such a to-do. A Sacred Stupid Cow {SSC}.

Another {SSC} is your reverence for a piece of cloth with stars and stripes on it. Is it worth more or less than a life? More or less than a limb? It's cloth that the highest legislators in your land give their wit to designing legislation as to its disposal. Proper disposal of old flags is burning! Yet if I burnt an less than new one on the street, it's likely that I would be arrested.

I'd better say something about Korea or we will have an extra posting. And not from god. I see she has already cra.. . The latest one is really amusing. Are there really persons so naive about the big bad world? Whatever about being excused for not knowing something about Korea, you would hope god would know a little more about China. I can assure god that the average Chinese person is very well aware of the World and even the US. There are HUGE numbers of Chinese citizens in Ireland primarily to learn english. One of the benefits of being small and neutral. They contribute hugely to our economy and are most welcome.

righthand, were you addressing me when you said: "Another {SSC} is your reverence for a piece of cloth with stars and stripes on it. Is it worth more or less than a life? More or less than a limb? If so, I can only respond with, I don't have a lot of reverence for our flag, even though it doesn't have any stars and stripes on it. It does have a maple leaf though. Actually I liked our old one better which was the red ensign with the Canadian coat of arms in the field under the Union Jack.

Now on the Clinton issue, I think we both agree. I couldn't care less if he got it on with an adult in the oval office or in his wife's bedroom. It's got nothing at all to do with politics. Those who made such a big issue of it were probably mostly jealous that they couldn't convince a pretty young thing like Monica to .... them too. Well all except those who think they are God and like to pretend that they wouldn't enjoy a good blo................ Well, you get the idea.

Chinese people: They are very hard workers and kick Canadian students asses in our universities being always at the head of the class. Their hard work will pay off for them in the end and they will take over from the U.S. and rule the world. That's if the U.S. doesn't try to nuke them first. Thank Dawg they have their own nuclear deterrant.

Great post. I really needed cheering up this morning. I was up in the middle of the night to do a post and pack my bags. {New sig} One problem, you didn't mention Korea in your post. You may not but I will get another/last public reminder. So just to satisfy the authoroities before I forget.

North Korea blasts U.S. envoy appointment
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/12488962.htm
North Korea on Saturday demanded the United States rescind its recent appointment of a special envoy on human rights in the communist country, warning the position could hurt international efforts to end the North's nuclear weapons program. The demand came as a Chinese vice foreign minister prepared to travel to North Korea to discuss resuming the six-party nuclear talks.
My your in "your reverence for a piece of cloth" was wrong in being addressed to you. See you soon.
