Bush names Bolton as U.N. ambassador

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/08/...ent/index.html

Quote:
Ending a five-month standoff over a controversial nomination, President Bush today used a recess appointment to name John Bolton the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. "This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about U.N. reform," Bush said. The move thwarts some Senate Democrats who had tried to block Bolton's nomination.

Aaah, yes! The Imperium...

Evidence that Bush is a dictator, as I allege in the discussion of the State of Emergency.

Declared State of Emergency in USA since 1933?

Patrick...

Are you denying that our Republic permits this practice? Are you aware that most presidents have done this. This is just one of the larger appointments...

Interesting news. I am not sure if I trust Bolton, but maybe he will help the UN become a little more relevent and useful.

It's one of the few things the government does that's accually allowed by the US constitution. Personally, I'm just going to wait and hope until the US gets expelled from the UN. The UN being generally liberal, and and Bolton being just another Neo-con, will probably speed the process that much of the world is hoping for.

Interesting that you find one who has demonstrated himself to be both a thug and a liar to be suitable to become a senior diplomat representing this country.

Bolton is ONE ammbastor of over 190. Annan has even said that he wont be able to be a one man army against the UN. He will have to work WITH the UN just as the other 190 or so do. He might be able to do some fluffing of feathers but actually making it more "relevent" is to be seen.

Bolton is one of only fifteen ambassadors represented on the UN Security Council and one of only five permenant members, each of whom has veto power over Security Council resolutions.

What will make Bolton irrelevent is his inability to play well with others. His history as a "diplomat" thus far has been an unmittigated disaster. I am sure he will continue on a similar course.

personally, i don't see any difference in our foreign policy now that bolton is in..

will we vote for the icj, or any resolution putting pressure on israel? nope. bolton can certainly push for sanctions on iran and/or north korea, but i doubt any other countries will follow us down that familiar path. bolton has no mandate, at most he's just going to be this loud mouthed baffoon who people will just ignore. we'll see if he has the capacity to be a professional and a diplomat - if he does that maybe he can surprise us all. i doubt it, but never say never i guess. (definitely seems like a long shot though.)

hope for america...

A great line from a NY Times op/ed:
Quote:
If there's a positive side to President Bush's appointment of John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations yesterday, it's that as long as Mr. Bolton is in New York, he will not be wreaking diplomatic havoc anywhere else.
