Muslim support of suicide bombing wanes

WASHINGTON — Support for suicide bombings has dropped significantly in several predominantly Muslim nations, a worldwide public-opinion survey has found — a positive note at a time concerns have been heightened by terrorist attacks in London, Iraq and Israel. The report by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, released Thursday, also found substantial concern about Islamic extremism not only among Westerners but also in Muslim nations. Three-quarters of those in Morocco and roughly half of those in Pakistan, Turkey and Indonesia said Islamic extremism posed a threat to their countries. A chasm continues to exist between the Muslim world and the West in attitudes toward the appropriate role of Islam in government and the roots of Islamic radicalism. But the survey showed ebbing support among Muslims for the terrorism that has defined global relations since the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington nearly four years ago.

Surveys like this are as worthless as the paper they are written on in my opinion.

It's good news if the survey results are true.

Well, there have always been plenty of Muslims who oppose suicide bombings. There are also, I would imagine, muslims who oppose the actions of the US as well as those of Al-Qaeda.

So what are you trying to say, dot? That they're beginning to accommodate themselves to the Iraq thing? That they're foaming at the mouth 23% less than they were foaming before? That the US somehow hasn't shot itself in the foot?

Support for suicide bombings and other acts of violence in defense of Islam has dropped since 2002 by 34 percentage points in Lebanon, 12 points in Indonesia and 8 points in Pakistan. The exception to the trend is Jordan, where support increased by 14 points, to 57%.

Forty-two percent fewer cavities, eh? Well Lebanon just lost a popular figure to a bombing. And Indonesia has seen its tourist industry threatened by the Bali bombing.

I hope it's all true, because the only way to stop the crazies is to stop the support for them in their own communities, support that the US has devoted itself to inflaming under Bush, to judge by his actions.

i think one of the questions asked in this poll was "do you have confidence in bin laden".. what the hell kind of question is that??

the only think this poll tells me is that there's going to have to be many more terrorist attacks for the muslim world to truly reject terrorism and bin-laden's message.
