i am a little confused. do the g8 leaders gather periodically just to discuss how to help other countries out of their goodwill? or do they discuss how to "enforce" "free" trade, just like we decided to "export" democracy to some oil-rich country/region?

Of course they talk about how best to ram their own pet policies down everybody's throat.
That said, it's not necessarily a bad thing if the leaders of the world's most powerful economies (I'll leave aside the question of Canada's membership...) get together for a chin-wag. How much good it does is another matter.
