Ex-Hostages: Iran's President Was Captor

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A quarter-century after they were taken captive in Iran, five former American hostages say they got an unexpected reminder of their 444-day ordeal in the bearded face of Iran's new president-elect.

Watching coverage of Iran's presidential election on television dredged up 25-year-old memories that prompted four of the former hostages to exchange e-mails. And those four realized they shared the same conclusion — the firm belief that President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (search) had been one of their Iranian captors.

"This is the guy. There's no question about it," said former hostage Chuck Scott, a retired Army colonel who lives in Jonesboro, Ga. "You could make him a blond and shave his whiskers, put him in a zoo suit and I'd still spot him."

Folks, do you believe that the identifications are accurate? Personally, I have my doubts. It's been a long time and, after all, don't these bearded Iranians all look the same to you after a while?

He's probably the same one. Has he denied it? It's long past anyhow. Reagan gave 'em rockets to let the hostages go in the October Surprise...

This is depicted by his personal website Mardomyar (http://www.mardomyar.com), or the people's friend. His website says he joined the Revolutionary Guards voluntarily after helping to found the student union which took over the US embassy in 1979

Anyway, I somehow doubt that even the Iranians would allow someone with a real dirty history to be elected as leader. Besides, if the President is who they claim to be, wouldn't the CIA have a large file on this fella already to confirm it?

But in Iran, that would not be considered dirty history, it would be considered very noble and brave. The members of the revolutionary guard faced down America, who had sponsered a pretty nasty dictatorship and insisted that we turn that nasty dictator over to the Iranian people to be judged for the crimes that had been committed against the Iranian people. Agree with them or not, from the perspective of the Iranians, this is not something to be ashamed of, it is a point of honor.

Well, not only does he deny it, but political opponents of his who took part in it do too:-

So I guess that's another 'urban myth' down the drain....

Yeah, I can see lsbskins1's point. Even if he were one of the kidnappers, so what? He'd be considered a hero by most Iranians, wouldn't he?

TEHRAN, Iran -
Iran's new president was a member of the hard-line Islamic student group that seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979, but he opposed the takeover — preferring instead to target the Soviet Embassy, friends and former hostage-takers said Thursday.

The former students who carried out the seizure and held the Americans for 444 days said Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had no role in taking the embassy or guarding the hostages.

In the turbulent early days of Iran's Islamic Revolution, Ahmadinejad was more concerned with putting down leftists and communists at universities than striking at Americans, they said. During the long standoff, he was writing and speaking against leftist students, they said.
