Sex Offender's Attacker: 'I Would Do It Again'

Sex Offender's Attacker: 'I Would Do It Again' - News Story - KIRO Seattle

Quote:
PUYALLUP, Wash. -- A woman who police said assaulted a sex offender with a baseball bat said," I'd do it again if I had to," reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

After learning that her Puyallup neighbor, 24-year-old William Baldwin, was a convicted level 3 sex offender from a flyer she received from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, Tammy Gibson said, "I lost my mind."

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty interviewed both Gibson and Baldwin.

"She grabbed a bat, picked it up and started beating the crap out of me. She started beating me the way a man would with a bat", said Baldwin of the incident. "I've never even seen her before and she just comes over and accuses me of molesting her children and attacks me with a bat."

Gibson said she had seen Baldwin around the River Road Trailer Park and adjacent Cottonwood Mobile Home Park several times over the last year.

"I can't believe that he was allowed in our neighborhood", said Gibson.

Gibson said she often saw the 7 feet 3 inches tall Baldwin talking with her 10-year-old daughter.

"Last year, on the Fourth of July, he was talking to my daughter. I got the flyer in the mail and I snapped. I went nuts," Gibson told McCarty.

Gibson said she once told her live-in boyfriend she thought Baldwin was harmless, but said all that changed when she got the flyer that listed Baldwin's conviction on two counts of first-degree child molestation in 1999 as well as other offenses.

The flyer states that Baldwin lured a 5-year-old girl into a doghouse in his backyard and sexually assaulted her. That crime was committed while he was on parole for another sexual assault in which he forced a different 5- year-old girl into a sex act with him.

Gibson, who one neighbor referred to as "angry Tammy," at first told investigators she believed Baldwin had molested her daughter, then later admitted she knew he had not, but was afraid he would re-offend, court documents said.

Baldwin told McCarty he understands why people need to be informed that he is living in their neighborhood and claimed he has been assaulted in the past when people residing near him learned about his criminal past.

I saw this and thought about what people may think. Do you think that the women should be forgiven or that she deserves full punishment? Or something else?

I would say she should at least have to cover his medical bills considering she had other, less violent alternatives she could have explored first.
"I lost my mind."
Umm nope. No insanity defense. This was a thought out assault. She also impeded an investigation by lying to the cops. I would think charges of assault could be justified, but I'm not a city attorney nor do I know many of the facts. Just reflecting on the story as presented.

It's assault. She should be prosecuted.

We do not consider who the victim is in court cases. Do not put the victim on trial.

This psycho should be locked up. Is she going to take a ball bat to the boy who pops her daughters cherry? Sick woman.
The man didnt re offend, so she should be arrested. She is no hero.
Now, if the man HAD molested her child, she would be justified in doing this. But he DIDNT molest anyone.

No one need to be locked up here. Just separate the two. As for the question, who knows?

I think they should give her a warning and let it go. Lots of people who do very bad things get away with them, or get very light punishments, so in this case since she's seen him talking to her daughter (my question would be, "why is he talking to kids". There's no earthly reason for him to be talking to children. Go to an old people's trailer park to live would be the smart thing for him to do. I think he is showing intent to commit more molestations by some of his behavior.

I'm just wondering how a 7-foot 3-inch tall man could physically fit inside a doghouse, let alone molest a five year old in one.

On the topic - it is vigilantism and should be treated as any other crime of that nature. I could anonymously circulate a flyer claiming a neighbor I dislike is a sex offender. There is a reason dishing out justice is left to the pros.

Seeing as how he molested children you can tell that he really loves children, so will be drawn to them without necessarily molesting them. What the woman did was become an assulter to the man for what he had done in the past. When someone goes to jail for crimes committed, they pay the price the state has set for them to pay and are considered rehabilitated. When someone hears about another person's past crimes, they associate that crime with them and think of them as a criminal that will strike again, as he was convicted twice, right?

What this woman did was try to protect her child from this man, as she thought they needed protecting. She accuses the man of commiting a crime against her child and knows that assualting him is wrong, but does it anyway. How does assaulting a former criminal make your child safe? She had no evidence of him molesting her child, but sees the picture that concerns child molesters, that they are unpopular and that the community will support her if she did the wrong thing, which she probably didn't feel like doing anyway. It goes against a woman's instinct to react with violence of the highest degree, being a premeditated attack.

Now let's take the man and put him in another district, so she would need to travel far away to attack him. Would she? Let's say he was currently in another country, what would she do? Would she buy a ticket to go and attack him? Would she stop at the gas station to fill up on the way to attack him? If she lost her mind she would speed right past the gas station if low on petrol and find herself out of gas on the way to 'get' him, in some instances. If she 'lost her mind' she could walk down the road to attack him though, as that requires less time and her mind can remain lost for the period of time it takes to get to him, but each time she opens a door or takes a step she regains some of her lost mind. Some people say counting to ten is a good way to see what to do.

So was she still in an angry state when she got to him? I think she was just excited and thought that beating him was the appropriate thing to do, as she would see herslef doing the right thing. Ithink she is guilty of assault.

Going to my destruction!

Those saying they should let her go off free are selling out the principles of human rights, which belong even to ex-cons. This lady sounds like a nutjob. She should be prosecuted for assault with a deadly weapon.

Look out kid, they keep it all hid.

I agree. Did the guy breach the law? Or any court order specific to him?
If he did, she knew what to do: call the police, or if things looked more urgent than that, make a citizen's arrest herself.

But try to beat his brains out? Perhaps she would benefit from a spell in a prison for the criminally insane.

One man's horny teenager is another man's sex offender. Let the law sort it out. Otherwise, we'll be giving license to fathers of daughters to go after horny teenage boys with a baseball bat.

This is sort of true. Of course, you can't make such a case and be popular with everyone.
