Chavez warns Colombia over US base

Al Jazeera English - News - Chavez Warns Colombia Over Us Base
Quote:
Venezuela's president has warned Colombia against building a US military base on the countries shared border, saying he would consider such a move an act of "aggression".

Hugo Chavez said on Thursday that he would not allow a US military base to be established in La Guajira, a region spanning northeastern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela.

"We will not allow the Colombian government to give La Guajira to the empire," Chavez said, referring to the US during a speech to a packed auditorium of uniformed soldiers.

"Colombia is launching a threat of war at us."

The Venezuelan leader said that if Colombia built the base, his government would revive a decades-old territorial conflict and stake a claim to the entire region.

The US maintains a military base at the Pacific port of Manta in Ecuador, but Rafael Correa, Ecuador's president and an ally of Chavez, has repeatedly said he will not renew the 10-year leases when it runs out next year.

Chavez said that William Brownfield, the US Ambassador to Colombia, had suggested that the Ecuador base could be moved to La Guajira.
Call me crazy but I think Bush wants to start a third war while he still can. Unlike heckling Iran he might actually succeed here because Chavez is more of a dingbat than Ahmadinejad.

U.S. interests is the key, and not any particular individual.

Your telling me that Hugo Fata$$ isn't looking for a war with Colombia? Hugo has been financing leftist guerillas against the Colombian government, preaching for a leftist revolution in all of Latin America including Colombia and lets FARC guerillas maintain a safe haven in Venezuela!

I never saw it that way. When he didn't attack Columbia after they raided a FARC camp on his territory I just sort of figured he wanted things to stay as they are.

I retract my comment about Chavez's digbatishness, mostly. Waiting patiently while guerrillas in other countries do your work for you actually makes sense.

Colombia lets the US government violate their own citizens rights by letting US law enforcement agencies work inside their borders. So any distrust, or dislike the Venzuelans have for the Colombian government, its well earned.

Unless, of course, you want more Police State cheerleaders on the sidelines crowding you out.

Rather is could have been that Chavez didn't want a border war that would escalate fast with a Colombia, which has a battle tested military, 15 million more people and would recieve weapons and money support from America.

LOL, it is mutual cooperation. Just because the US government and military helps a country doesn't make it always a bad thing. The leftist and rightist guerilla and drug cartels are merciless and brutal people. I am sure many Colombians do not share your views.

You're quite wrong.

I mean, sure, the Narcs, and the politicains want us there, but the people don't.

And it is a clear violation of both US, and Colombias Constitutions for this to occur. ( Killing Pablo Amazon.com: Killing Pablo: The Hunt for the World's Greatest Outlaw: Mark Bowden: Books )

This is one of those topics where I contend you can catch The History Chanell revising the truth for their dumbed down audience.

To watch their Special, Killing Pablo, you could easily be lead to believe the people want us there, and few critical laws are being abused, but, you'd be wrong.

Mark Bowden gave us a great way to compare stories, and you can never make the case that he's sympathetic to my viewpoint. He's almost a Neocon himself. He just screwed up, and published before the revising hand of the US government, and their minions.

LOL because Pablo Escobar was great to the people. What does this prove? Really nothing. Like usually you toss up red herrings and not even good ones.

How do you get that from what I said?

He published a whole book discounting your "point".

And as usual it comes back to a proxy debate over whether constitutionality is more important than the obvious morality of the situation. Arguing with libertarians is no fun.

I can see why Hugo would be threatened, and why the U.S. and Colombian leadership at least would want a base, but is Hugo really going to invade Columbia for it? who's being imperialist then?
