I'd believe it, especially when the CIA admitted to such charges not very long ago (there's a thread I started on this topic somewhere). You don't need LSD to be deeply mired in brainwashing, but it can help in that aim.
An obvious example would be Charles Manson, who no doubt utilized Hofmann's invention. Also, LSD may partly explain Arnold Schwarzenegger's acting career.
