Sorry, but a good person is not capable of cruelty to another person or living thing, especially torture of another human being.
If they were capable it would make them an evil person, who commits good deeds sometimes in an effort to become good again.

No not new age at all, the simple fact is that morality is subjective and contextual. A man may be a great and loving father, and also a serial killer.
