I somehow find it difficult to greatly fault the victims of an intended war of annihilation for their failure to be magnanimous enough with their attackers after successfully defending themselves.
Well then, Sonart, since you're so conceptually challenged when it comes to understanding how the Israelis might have had the wisdom to follow this advice from a decorated IDF combat veteran and member of the Knesset, you should, logically, "find it difficult to greatly fault" the Palestinians for being so incurably grouchy after 40 years.

For my part I really find it interesting to imagine what Abu bin Sonart of Sonart would think as he lugged a pail of filthy water under the hot sun for his children to drink. No doubt he'd be thinking "Y'know, if we only stopped foarming at the mouth, those Israelis would start being right NICE to us, yep."

Given Israel's history as ground zero for Arab aggression, I suspect most Israeli's are decorated IDF combat veterans. Gen. David Hackworth was one of America's most decorated Vietnam Vets, but that didn't save him from a reputation as a loopy, loud-mouthed political pain in the ass.

So please forgive me if quoting the apparent 20/20 hindsight of one Israeli officer - without taking into account whether or not the Palesitinians would even have agreed - doesn't miraculously swing me 180 degrees.

And given the history of the Moslem Mideast, the generally repressive nature of most Islamic states, the incomprehensibility of Sharia law, of revenge and "honor killings", and the fact that more Moslems have been killed by other Moslems than the U.S. and Israel combined, yes, I can understand why Palestinians are so incurably grouchy.

I just don't blame the Israelis.

Avnery predicted the whirlwind in '67? At what point since 1947 has Israel NOT been in the middle of a whirlwind?

Oh, as a good little Presbyterian I'll forgive you. But you really should stop snorting long enough to read some of Avnery's stuff.

Pretty well every point for the past 30 years ago, I'd say. Since Sadat in any case. And during that period the Israeli military has been nurtured on so many steroids as to make your spring-1967 view of the strategic situation rather laughable.

Israel may today, as ever, be surrounded by people who hate it. But it's not under any serious military threat, even when it pulls cheapjack-amateur antics like the summer of 2006.

No, the whirlwind today comes from those territories the Israelis have been administering with abject studpidity these past four decades.
