N.Y. governor apologizes after prostitution link

Governor apologizes after prostitution link - Politics - MSNBC.com

NEW YORK - Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized to his family and the public on Monday, but did not not elaborate on a bombshell report that he has been involved in a prostitution ring.

"I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family ... my sense of right and wrong," he said at a news conference at his Manhattan office. "I must now dedicate some time to rededicate my trust to my family."

Spitzer's wife stood at his side, her hands behind her back and her eyes cast downward, as he made the statement.

(The bolding of text above is mine).

Here are possibly other details from another source: WBEN 930 : Spitzer Linked To Prostitution Ring (details in the links within the source).

I think he should be worried more about his restoring his family's trust in him than to his trust to his family.

I had mixed feeling about him before. He was a great at cracking down on crime, but he was so heavy handed when he came to office and so self-righteous, that the irony of this made me laugh for hours. (not the happy kind)

I share your sense of irony. I wish I could say I couldn't find a better example of hypocrisy, but they abound. Politicians tend to be full of sh*t, and I'm sure there will be plenty of self-righteous excrement to follow this scandal.

I don't think it's only politicians that are hypocritical, it's just that people pay more attention to them and try to catch them at every fault. Everyone is hypocritical, but the ones who have to seem the firmest in their beliefs and have the closest scrutiny are the ones we pay attention to.

My personal "favorites" are when it's the rabid "family values" politicians who find themselves on the wrong side of the bathroom stall door... or whatever. I just wish it would tone down the rhetoric for a while, instead of stirring up their fellow attack dogs to new levels of mouth-frothing.

Aside from that, it's a personal relationship issue, and not necessarily indicative of their ability or lack thereof as a "leader". I'm pretty sure even most politicians are human, and everybody screws up.

The problem here, though, is that this individual went after prostitution rings in his jobs as district attorney and attorney general. There appear to also be some strange financial dealings involved (which was enough to get the IRS' attention - attention that started the ball rolling).

He said in his resignation announcement that this was a private matter: So, maybe those arrested under the john law he signed could use the excuse that it's a private matter and, thus, the police have no right to arrest him.

I really wish one day there would be a politician who admitted that he really isn't "deeply regretful" and blah blah blah and just admitted that it sucks that he got caught.

I don't care about this whatsoever. It's so typical of americans to get thoroughly riled up at any kind of sexual scandal and yet barely blink an eye at much more pertinent issues.

Look out kid, they keep it all hid.

If they were truly remorseful over engaging in the particular behavior, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But I think we all know that these politicians are usually expressing this so-called remorse only because it is politically correct (or at least expedient) to do so.

What really annoys me is the politician that apologizes for what he or she says just because someone whined about being offended. We know these politicians aren't really sorry about what they said and I wish they would stand up for it. Let's take, for example, what Geraldine Ferraro recently said about Barack Obama (Ferraro defends controversial comments on Barack Obama - The Daily Breeze). It certainly shows the kind of paternalism that exists in the Democrat Party (and within American liberalism in general), and I disagree with what she said, but I'm glad she is standing up for herself and refusing to give in to political correctness.

Because of their frequency and their context, politician apologies are pretty much meaningless.

What about the poor spouses? They're forced to stand next to these clowns appearing supportive while their "significant other" confesses to infidelity, corruption, all sorts of behaviors that should be his/her alone to apologize for.

I would have loved to see Spitzer's wife whack him with her purse and bitch him out in front of the cameras during his resignation. That would have been reality TV worth watching.

I don't think they're forced to do it. In this case, Spitzer's wife didn't want him to resign.

It would certainly have been entertaining.

What I want to know is why there were federal wiretaps on a state governor in the first place.Link:
Quote:
Mr. Spitzer announced he was stepping down at a grim appearance at his Midtown Manhattan office, less than 48 hours after it emerged that he had been intercepted on a federal wiretap...
Anybody know?

I think fushigi the feds got into the thing because Federal Laws had been broken. Mann Act and possible concealment of earnings from the tax regulations..

What strikes me in such a case is the friends and political cronies of this guy attempting to condone his hypocrisy and deliberat violation of laws he had sworn under oath to uphold? Reminds me of the Clinton years when his supporters said his dalliances were his private life?

Ah, I got it. Looks like it might have been a vengeance play by HSBC bank that made this all go down. Link
Quote:
Mr. Spitzer’s suspicious financial transactions at North Fork might never have been discovered were it not for a Suspicious Activity Report filed by HSBC about the shell companies linked to Emperor’s Club V.I.P. in October, according to several people with knowledge of the inquiry, who spoke about the investigation on condition of anonymity.

As it turned out, both the North Fork Bank and HSBC had faced inquiries into their lending practices led by Mr. Spitzer when he was New York attorney general. In the case of North Fork, Mr. Spitzer announced a settlement in 2003 requiring it to refund more than $20,000 to dozens of homeowners and cease what he said was its practice of charging homeowners illegal fees.
They say as Atty. Gen'l he was a crusader against corporate fraud, I guess he made some enemies along the way.

Oh yes I forgot to ask, was this guy a Democrat? None of the Mainstream media mentioned it. When Repubs are accused of sexual misconduct they are usually labeled by the media as Conservative Bible Stompers and always identifed a Republicans? Is there a double standard?
Anyway I hope the hypocrite gets prison and I trust his wife has beaten the crap out of him.

He shouldn't have been given the honor of a press conference. They should've busted down his door and chased him around the neighborhood with a camera in his face like everyone else.
