U.S. says it launched missile attack in Somalia

Quote:
U.S. launches missile attack in Somalia - Somalia - MSNBC.com
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Pentagon officials said Monday the United States launched an air strike in Somalia to go after a terrorist suspect.

In the strike early Monday, Somali police said three missiles hit a Somali town held by Islamic extremists, destroying a home and seriously injuring eight people.
Haven't heard much about Somalia in a while. It figures the news wouldn't be very good.

Here's an update, if anyone's interested:

US fails a fourth time to hit al-Qa'ida suspect in Somalia - Africa, World - Independent.co.uk

A US missile strike in Somalia, aimed at a man described by the Pentagon as a "known al-Qa'ida terrorist", succeeded only in hurting six civilians and killing three cows and a calf, the IoS has learned.

At least one Tomahawk missile was believed to have been fired from a US submarine off the Somali coast on Monday.

That is a important news story, did not hear about it on CNN yet.

I guess this means that a least six more civilians will be supportive of anti-American terrorists.

By the way who answered the phone to order that strike?

Why did they use a missle? In that location why could they not have sent in some undercover people to shoot that terrorist in person?

I agree with Technosoul, this seems like an interesting issue.

The US attacking a nation and its sovereign citizens with a missile to eliminate one known "terrorist" is rather odd...I would hope our nation's military has pursued other measures with Somalia before these missile strikes. I don't think it is good for our world image and reputation to have the US military attacking civilians and sovereign nations with missiles to fight terrorism, unless we have at least attempted to pursue other options first.

It's odd to us, but to the government it's apparently normal enough. Of course, because such acts are done in our collective name, Afghans (and others) can place the blame on any of us, whether we like it or not.

It's not that there are no problematic 'local militants' or terrorism from non-US-allied groups -- but these kinds of examples mostly just galvanize these groups.
