Maharishi Mahesh Yogi dies at 91

LA Times - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi; founded Transcendental Meditation movement
Quote:
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation movement, who taught the Beatles to meditate, made "mantra" a household word in the 1970s and built a multimillion-dollar empire on a promise of inner harmony and world peace, died Tuesday in Vlodrop, the Netherlands. He was believed to have been 91.

Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation organization, said the Maharishi died peacefully of natural causes at his private residence in Vlodrop, a village about 120 miles south of Amsterdam where he moved his headquarters in 1990.
A sad day.

The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi brought the technique of Transcendental Meditation from the east and gave it to us. I practice TM occasionally and it really is a great way to get some peace out of stressful times. The best part is that there is no religion attached to it, theres no commitment, you are taught the technique and you're on your way. I think its great that theres a way to get some sort of spiritual peace without having to join anything.

I'm well aware of who he was: it doesn't change my question.

I didn't realize that my statement needed explanation. I was expressing my sadness that a spiritual leader had passed on and we can no longer benefit from his services. Does that answer your question?

Your statement was that it was a sad day and I simply asked why. You didn't say that you felt or thought it was a sad day, you made the statement in such a way as to suggest that it was a fact. Even if you merely feel or think it's a sad day, I would have asked the same question.

I met the Maharishi in Spain about 20 years ago, he had a ceremony at the Marbella bullring where they hosed everyone with coloured water.

Right, Chance. Just never let me catch you calling the day on which someone you happen to like dies "a sad day". Cuz then you're a-gonna have to explain yourself in full rationality. (rolls eyes)

And kite, TM is probably a registered trademark (get it?) or something, but apart from that Maharishi was merely one of many who have promoted Eastern wisdom in the West.

God, just drop it. You seem to have an unhealthy fetish for arguing for argument's sake.

He was good in that Jaws movie when he said "We're going to need a bigger boat".

Sounds like a GWAR concert. So, Maharishi was an actor/musician too huh. Not surprising he died of a drug overdose. Kinda creepy friendship with Ashley Olsen though.

I'd like to thank Charlie Hodge, bringing me scarves and water.

I think I would consider TM a type of religion. It had a leader and it was practiced by people for spiritual benefit. And I would think (although I am not employed by Webesters) that this would lead one to define TM as a faith or religion. whether it would be considered a "legitimate" religion is another thing entirely.

It wasnt a sad day for me. He transcended his feeble body, most likely traded for a more perfect vehicle. The body is disposable... like the wrapper for the product it envelopes. I am happy for him...and for us. We should celebrate for him.

NOT TRUE! You yourself just said the opposite:

Unlike organized religion that requires a subscription paid in huge cash tithes and bowing and scraping rituals of penance... and bullshit LAWS that are impossible to fulfill (which keep you forever indentured to mortal men and fake dieties)

Our brother the Maharishi lives on in you... he really hasnt gone anywhere. Arent we all part of the "One"?

I argue we still benefit from his services.
