New Mid-East peace drive launched

BBC NEWS | World | Middle East | New Mid-East peace drive launched
Quote:
Israeli and Palestinian leaders have agreed to start talks aimed at reaching a full peace deal by the end of 2008.
Opening a Middle East peace conference, US President George W Bush said all outstanding issues dividing the two sides would be on the table.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the talks must include the status of Jerusalem as a Palestinian capital, and the future of refugees.

Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said Israel was prepared to make compromises for peace.

Standing before the diplomats from more than 40 countries and international agencies at the US naval academy at Annapolis, Maryland, President Bush stepped back to allow the Palestinian and Israeli leaders to shake hands.

"We agree to engage in vigorous, ongoing and continuous negotiations and shall make every effort to conclude an agreement before the end of 2008," Mr Bush said, reading from a statement agreed by the two sides.

Neither side has an option left but peaceful solutions.
Otherwise, both deliver endless blood-chamber.
Jerusalem seems to be a key element, while dividing that city may result in unexpected outcomes.

I hope that both (Israelis and Palestinians) pave the way to establish Palestine as a state.

Yes Rainbow the division of Jerusalem plus many other changes may help enable an accord of peace for the region. It will much depend on how well both sides control the extremists

I agree with this, but I don't think anything will come from Annapolis. Fatah and Abbas are weak and really not in control. Hamas is the controlling element. Nothing can be accomplished without them. That said Hamas seem stubborn enough to never do anything.

It is a key, but the main sticking point is the right to return. The Pals keep demanding it, yet the it would be suicide for the Israelis to accept it.

We may take Hamaz and Iran to the table. As a matter of fact, all those representatives that are willing to participate.
It may sound insane, but by opting for that variant we have the following :
- a peace around that region, as long as talks continue (and that condition should be taken as a fundament to participate in talks)
- none of side would complain on lack of participation, ever

Why should we pay that much attention to what Hamaz and/or Iran says, since Hamaz is sitting into Iran's pocket (in almost all the crucial - to a state existence - fields) ?
Iran wants to postpone and/or derail the peace-talks at all costs, till Iran is in a possession of enriched uranium. Then, Iran would use that as an argument. Let them have it, as well.
If Iran (along with its supporters) use that (enriched uranium) for WMD purposes as a real threat, annihilate them all wihtout mercy.
The Iranian governing body needs to udnerstand, that WMD is not a toy but a tool capable of erasing some guys from History pages, for good, therfore the use of WMD as an argument is not an option but a deadly necessity instead.

In case with Jerusalem, that city needs to be open to all the people, without any reservation to either Arabs or Jews. It must be safe, as well, in order to prevent some extreme elements from any military activity.
Therefore, a governing body - that would manage Jerusalem - needs to be politically, administratively and socially strong.
However, making Jerusalem as an "open city" seems to be a mistake.

Whether the Annapolis talks bring something really constructive, the only time will witness that.
