Afghanistan 'falling into hands of Taliban' | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited

The Taliban has a permanent presence in 54% of Afghanistan and the country is in serious danger of falling into Taliban hands, according to a report by an independent thinktank with long experience in the area.
Despite tens of thousands of Nato-led troops and billions of dollars in aid poured into the country, the insurgents, driven out by the American invasion in 2001, now control "vast swaths of unchallenged territory, including rural areas, some district centres, and important road arteries", the Senlis Council says in a report released yesterday.
The people support their own who are aided by foreign mercinaries of their own faith. Is it fear or better the devil known?

I've read and seen this report yesterday, which many in the Canadian government dismissed it as coming from an "uncreditable source."

Experts here who have been studying the situation over the years and how things are unfolding do say there are things within this report which require attention to, but the solutions in the report are from unreachable, to borderline insane.....

Allow me to elaborate:

• The report from my memory stated that most of the country is in the hands of the Taliban, which is not the case. There are Taliban raiding certain areas and attempting to take back areas, but are quickly pushed back. There is no stable control by the Taliban over any of Afghanistan, expcept a few villages here and there.

• The report claims that NATO needs to double its forces from 40,000 to 80,000.... however this is incorrect, as the experts which I have heard from claim that even 80,000 isn't nearly enough.

• They claimed that in order to end this war, it was suggested that NATO expands its mission in Pakistan to fight the organizations head on..... however the experts who studied this report quickly dismissed this idea.... mainly for the sole reason that.... gee.... Pakistan has nukes and wouldn't tollerate an invasion by their allies?

Quite honestly, I don't see how logically they can claim the Taliban are winning.... in each organized battle against NATO, the Taliban lost, and they have lost scores more then we have.

But I feel it is true this will be a never ending war, and killing one another is not going to finish anything.
