Al Gore, U.N. panel win Nobel Peace Prize

Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize - Climate Change - MSNBC.com

Quote:
OSLO, Norway - Former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Friday for their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change and lay the foundations for counteracting it.

"I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize," Gore said in a statement. "We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity."

Gore won an Academy Award this year for his film "An Inconvenient Truth," a documentary on global warming, and had been widely expected to win the prize.
Deserved? Not Deserved?

Not deserved! All this global warming crap is nothing more than a scam for leftists to try to scare people into giving them more control over their lives.

As for "Inconvenient Truth," it has been suggested that the things liar algore is saying are not necessarily true (or, at the very least, have not been proved).

Inaccuracies in Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth - The New Party Articles

This article was first produced following an interim judgement of the High Court, since which time the full judgement has been given. In his full judgement the Judge listed nine inaccuracies rather than the 11 from the interim judgement - two appear to have been grouped together and another omitted. In the interests of clarity we have accordingly revised the details below.

The decision by the government to distribute Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth has been the subject of a legal action by New Party member Stewart Dimmock. The Court found that the film was misleading in nine respects and that the Guidance Notes drafted by the Education Secretary.

# The film claims that melting snows on Mount Kilimanjaro evidence global warming. The Government
#The film suggests that evidence from ice cores proves that rising CO2 causes temperature increases over 650,000 years. The Court found that the film was misleading: over that period the rises in CO2 lagged behind the temperature rises by 800-2000 years.
#The film uses emotive images of Hurricane Katrina and suggests that this has been caused by global warming. The Government

I find it rather hypocritical that he tells people to bike to work, yet he flies around in a private plane all the time.

That's a "not deserved" vote for me.

Oh, but he gets carbon credits for it by donating to certain environmental organizations. (http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion...e-green_x.htm; Al Gore's Electric Bill, Carbon Credits, and A Lesson In Economics | The News is NowPublic.com)

By the way, the Occidental Chemical (formerly Hooker Chemical) in which he owns hundreds of thousand of dollars in stock was primarily responsible for Love Canal (http://www.epa.gov/history/topics/lovecanal/05.htm; U.S. Sues Hooker Chemical at Niagara Falls, New York | EPA History | US EPA).

That website is kind of funny. I could listen to Bush supporters go through their own hypocritical propaganda routines all day. Its somehow hypnotic...

The article you referenced doesn't seem to be on that site. Fortunately I'm a trained internet ninja and found it for you.

Inaccuracies in Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth - The New Party Articles

There are two valid inaccuracies. Lake Chad's disappearance is mostly because of agricultural overuse, although global warming will eventually cause that sort of problem to appear in other places. Some places will actually get more rain as the seas heat up and evaporate more. Second, no islands in New Zealand have been evacuated.

Now for all the things they got wrong. I'm sorry, but if you make the oceans warmer then coral reefs will bleach, hurricanes will get stronger and the glaciers will melt. Oh, and polar bears really are pretty much fuck'd.

Polar Bears International - Bear Facts

Also, CO2 and climate are related. Al Gore's movie is already outdated but it has the right idea.

I could see the potential for a Nobel Prize... possibly... if his information was accurate and his message was valid...

But why is this a Nobel PEACE Prize issue again?

What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

Beats me. Most of the Nobel peace prize laureates got it for humanitarian work or diplomacy or other things that intuitively connect with the name. Very few winners had anything to do with the environment.

What's really sad is that there just haven't been many great strides in international diplomacy or humanitarianism to compete with a meh publicist...

Chancellor, Dieval, does attacking the character of the messenger somehow invalidate the message? Can you counter his arguments in support of his opinions, or is your opinion of the person the extent of your objection to the idea of global warming?

The original post asked whether Al Gore and this particular UN agency deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. So, the original poster made at least part of it about Al Gore. I cited things from Al's own life that seriously call into question his commitment to the environment and, thus, things making him undeserving of the Prize.

How is telling the truth about Al Gore attacking his character? If you're going to bring up my referring to him as liar algore, he is a liar. He lied (said things he knew were not true) and that makes him a liar. I don't know if he ever said he invented the Internet, so I can't use that as an example. I don't know if he ever said Erich Segal wrote Love Story based on Al and Tipper's life, so I can't use that as an example. However, I did hear him state that he "discovered" (his word) Love Canal; and at the time the ecological disaster that bears its name occurred, I was living only a few miles from that neighborhood. He preaches living a carbon neutral lifestyle and yet he doesn't himself live such a lifestyle.

So, Al's character has direct bearing on whether he is deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize. As for the UN agency mentioned, well, it's the UN and isn't entitled to anything except to be disbanded. Also, there is some controversy surrounding Al's Inconvenient Truth documentary as to whether it is accurate - enough of a controversy to where I think it would automatically disqualify the documentary from consideration for such a great honor as a Nobel Peace Prize.

The value of the Prize was greatly cheapened in awarding it to Al Gore and to an agency of the United Nations.

Here we go again. What Isherwood said was slightly off-topic but its not what you responded to. He clearly asked about the message, not whether the prize was deserved.

The message of the original post was a question of whether the prize was deserved. As for the message of "efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change and lay the foundations for counteracting it," I addressed that in my first post in this thread: "All this global warming crap is nothing more than a scam for leftists to try to scare people into giving them more control over their lives."

The original post asked two questions requiring no more than a "yes or no" answer. I simply chose to expand on my answer.

Chancellor, Dieval, my apologies. Looking again at the OP, I see that it does indeed invite speculation as to the worthiness (character) of Gore's award. You guys are in line and I was out of line.
