Senate OKs wider kids‘ health program

Senate OKs wider kids‘ health program
Quote:
WASHINGTON - The Senate passed legislation Thursday to add 3 million lower-income children to a popular health insurance program in bipartisan defiance of President Bush‘s threatened veto.

It also gave Democrats, who secured a veto-proof margin, a chance to draw a stark distinction between their priorities and Bush‘s on an issue that resonates with voters.

Bush has proposed spending $5 billion to extend the program. He says the Senate‘s $35 billion expansion would balloon the decade-old program beyond its original mission of covering working poor children and would move more people toward government-run health care.

The Senate measure now must be reconciled with the House-passed $50 billion expansion, which was paid for partly by cutting government payments to Medicare health maintenance organizations.
The final vote on S-CHIP was 68-31, two votes beyond the veto-override threshhold. Now the bill goes to conference to reconcile the House and Senate versions. Bipartisanship at last!

I wonder what's better for America "tax and spend" Democrats or "cut, spend, and borrow" Republicans?

And Capitalism takes another step towards socialism, all for the children.

Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route?

i'd choose neither in a heartbeat...

states should be the ones pushing for these sorts of programs, not the federal government.

Well, I hope the American sheeple are paying attention, and are ready to start speaking out and taking action to reform this mess Congress is creating.

I think the time for civil disobedience is here to stay for the next 10 or so years.

What kind of civil disobedience do you have in mind exactly? How will you convince the vast majority of Americans who support SCHIP to join the movement?

And if most Americans still don't agree with your rendition of the facts, what then?

Why? State government, federal government, municipal government. Why does it matter which level of government taxes and provides a needed public service?

No one wins under socialism.
Except the people who need health care, education, and affordable housing--to name a few.

sdbest, if you like socialism, there are plenty of countries with high unemployment, high taxes, high government control of your life...

And little chance of moving up the economic ladder.

Hey if you think everyone should be equally miserable...

Are people less happy in other First World nations than in Shangri La (ie America)? You know that for a fact do you? Please share your sources.

I know this may come as a shock but

"Recent studies suggest that there is less economic mobility in the United States than has long been presumed. The last thirty years has seen a considerable drop-off in median household income growth compared to earlier generations. And, by some measurements, [the United States is] actually a less mobile society than many other nations, including Canada, France, Germany and most Scandinavian countries. This challenges the notion of America as the land of opportunity." [Source]

I know this will be impossible, but--in the light of the outcomes--you may want revisit your views on both capitalism and socialism.

S.

Mr V the idea that everyone is treated as an equal in socialist countries just shows that you don't bother to actually do any research.
Point out one socialist country that doesn't have its share of rich and poor alike.

Please explain why the United Kingdom is doing so well, please explain why our 1 GBP can be exchanged for 2 USD (it was only 1.5 USD a few years back)?
The Labour government (Socialists) have been in power for a decade now and our economy has been strengthening. In fact, we've become a victim of our own success as house prices have more than doubled in the same time and first time owners are finding it increasing difficult to get on the property ladder.
