| Mass'Debator | Prominent Californian journalist gunned down: Prominent Californian journalist gunned down Quote: A masked killer gunned down an "outspoken" Oakland newspaper editor in the open daylight Thursday morning, in what police suspect was a deliberate hit.
Chauncey Bailey, 57, died just before 8 a.m. after being shot at short range in the head and back near the county courthouse in downtown Oakland. The gunman fled the scene.
Police had no motive for the shooting, which did not appear to be random, but investigators were exploring the possibility the crime could have been linked to Bailey's journalism.
Police said they would be reviewing his articles for more insight. "I've spoken with him several times," Oakland police spokesman Roland Holmgren said of past interviews with Bailey, a respected fixture on the local news scene. "I know him as being a somewhat outspoken-type individual, assertive in his journalistic approach when trying to get at matters at hand."
Holmgren said the weapon used was not a handgun, but he would not disclose what calibre the gun was.
Bailey became the new editor of the Oakland Post in June. Before taking the top editorial job at the weekly, which covers issues in the Bay Area's African-American community, the veteran reporter worked for more than a decade at The Oakland Tribune, 10 years at the Detroit News, as well as local television and radio services.
Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums called Bailey's death a tragedy that represented a microcosm of Oakland's crime problem.
"The crime and violence on Oakland streets presents me with the most painful and difficult challenge I've ever faced," Dellums said in a statement.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland offered up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the gunman's arrest. Although witnesses are co-operating, there are no suspects yet, police said.
| All I gotta ask..... Is what was he recently working on? |
