WP: CIA to air decades of dirty laundry - washingtonpost.com Highlights - MSNBC.com
Quote:
The CIA will declassify hundreds of pages of long-secret records detailing some of the intelligence agency's worst illegal abuses, including overseas assassination attempts, domestic spying, kidnapping and infiltration of leftist groups from the 1950s to the 1970s, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden said Thursday.
This is strange. I agree they should do this, but I wonder why they are making this stuff public.
On top of this, it makes me wonder what kind of things will still be classified.

They are doing it because they are supposed to be required to declassify information after it's no longer pertinent to national security. ( The fact remains that they are always trying to keep a lid on what gets out, but never the less, this is supposed to be a transparent government. )

You know, all the juicy stuff they were doing on the domestic front, where they're not even legally to be able to operate. ( The realm of the FBI ) You know, like using HUD to manipulate taxes, and create ghettos making it easier to target Blacks with drugs, and other neat stuff like that. The things we can't entrust to just any government agency.

CIA to reveal decades of misdeeds

BBC NEWS | Americas | CIA to reveal decades of misdeeds

Quote:
The US Central Intelligence Agency is to declassify hundreds of documents detailing some of the agency's worst illegal abuses from the 1950s to 1970s.

The papers, to be released next week, will detail assassination plots, domestic spying and wiretapping, kidnapping and human experiments.

Many of the incidents are already known, but the documents are expected to give more comprehensive accounts.

It is "unflattering" but part of agency history, CIA chief Michael Hayden said.

"This is about telling the American people what we have done in their name," Gen Hayden told a conference of foreign policy historians.

Now this is what I call frank, open government. :)

Well, it's certainly proof that the times don't change much.

This is the CIA trying to pre-empt damage, or control damage that is spreading all over the internet about their past deeds. The CIA has been up to no good for the last 75 years (at least), and the things they have been doing in our name for that time is most likely, in many cases, not things that the majority of the people would have "conscented" to.

The internet has opened the world to instant access of information between foreign lands, and the lies of governments and "taught" histories is coming into the light of day faster than any government had been prepared to accept.

Now they are going to make a massive dump of information about past acts, some true, some "doctored", in an attempt to say "hey, we have nothing to hide, look at how honest we are since we are telling you now after 30 years have passed, and your ability to change, approve or stop anything has now passed."

Nice of them to tell us what they have done IN our name, that we never knew about, conscented to, or sanctioned.

Oops.

Careful there slugger, the CIA didn't even exist 75 years ago. The entity that evolved into the CIA in that era would have been the OSI, or the OSS. ( Sharing nomenclature with the Nazis . )

What Mike Ruppert has been able to bring to light about the CIA, HUD, and local police is at the center of the battle for truth in this country.

From The Wilderness Publications Home Page

It appears that HUD ( Housing, and Urban Development ) is able to create ghettos by manipulating the property taxs. This is the mechanism that creates the desire for the affluent to move to the suburbs, and for the poorer people to fill the vacume left by their vacancy. Then local police overlook active CIA agents peddling their illegal goods to the "undesriables" to finance their illegal wars abroad.

( Oddly enough you can simulate this exact same scenario with the tax code playing Sim City. )

Nowhere did I imply that the CIA creates poverty.

Well, nice to see someone is paying attention.

You and I both agree that this was the same entity, under a different name though?

I'd say the OSS ended up becoming the CIA.. for the most part anyways.. The US government has been up to some shady dealings for years.. and years and years.. and for some reason the American people have been none the wiser.. I almost blame what they have been allowed to do on ourselves.. We have for so long allowed them to do what they please behind closed doors.. that they are so used to it now.. i doubt we will ever know what all the CIA is up to.. nor has been up to in the past..

I guess the question now will be.. Once this 'sensitive' information is released.. will the American people hear it. and be disgusted enough to demand a change now? The CIA can be blamed in my opinion.. partially for the current state of the US.. We have allowed a secret police to roam the world.. doing what is in 'best interest' for America.. no matter the cost to our reputation. to human life. to anything..

I completely disagree with this, as it can serve NO good purpose.
For one thing, it will air our dirty laundry to the world. Past tense or not, these are things that can only diminish our international prestige even further, if we even have any left at all.
For another, it is our fault for continually electing incompetents and criminals to oversee the spooks anyway. We need to install proper leadership and dredging up the past will do nothing toward that aim.
Lastly, the CIA IS a covert agency, after all. We shouldn't know what they do and we are not SUPPOSED to know what our spies do. If WE know then the whole world knows.
Exposing past embarrassments will do nothing positive. We need to address point #2 for what to do about the CIA, while still keeping them a secret organization.

The whole pointless idea of publicizing this stuff is ridiculous.

Since America is such an honest and pure country, then the CIA has nothing bad to hide. So there should be no problems releasing all the good deeds that our country has done for other countries.

I'm the thought that never crossed my mind.

This is just a diversionary tactic to bring peoples hopes into considering they have changed and that the present government does not indulge in such outrageous unscrupulous dealings with their citizens or those of other countries :)

CIA says: Here's what we want you to know about what we did wrong in the past. We will show you what we deem necessary, and we will label this as an act of kindness. We will do this all with a smile and expect you to smile. We will expect your thanks and will accept any type of condemnations you will have because of these documents. This is all you need to know, and all you will be told.

America Says: Ok.

FWIW, CIA=USA.

Like people, a country is what it does, not what it claims it is.

Will any, or most, of this be "redacted..." I think I have the right term. You know, blackened out like the Bush administration keeps doing?

I actually haven't seen any specifics about this yet. I would imagine certain details might be omitted, like maybe some faces and names.

Whole pages are redacted. The ones I saw were apparently photocopied and some pages were plain white rectangles and others had whole paragraphs blanked out. There are no faces or other graphics as far as I can tell.

I'm not surprised, really. I don't think this information will even be understood by the majority of people who view it.

Here is the direct link. It will take a while to download.
